Fragrant Steamed Perilla Leaves with Seasoning: A True Rice Thief!
Aromatic Steamed Perilla Leaves with Savory Seasoning
Perilla leaves grown outdoors are large, thick, and intensely fragrant, even a bit spicy. When marinated and steamed, they become wonderfully tender with a delicate, captivating aroma that’s simply divine. In the past, one could simply place them in a rice cooker to steam while the rice was cooking. Now, with electric pressure cookers, that’s not quite the same, so we’ll use a pot to create this delicious seasoned steamed dish. This recipe transforms humble perilla leaves into an unforgettable side dish that will undoubtedly become a family favorite.
Main Ingredients- 100g fresh perilla leaves (about 15-20 large leaves)
- 1/4 onion (thinly sliced)
- 1 red chili pepper (seeds removed, finely chopped for color)
Flavorful Seasoning Sauce- 4 Tbsp soy sauce (for savory depth)
- 2 Tbsp plum extract or syrup (for sweetness and aroma)
- 1 Tbsp minced scallions (adds fresh fragrance)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic (the key to pungent flavor)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil (for a finishing touch of nutty aroma)
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds (for texture and nutty flavor)
- 4 Tbsp soy sauce (for savory depth)
- 2 Tbsp plum extract or syrup (for sweetness and aroma)
- 1 Tbsp minced scallions (adds fresh fragrance)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic (the key to pungent flavor)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil (for a finishing touch of nutty aroma)
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds (for texture and nutty flavor)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, the perilla leaves are the star, so wash them carefully, one by one, under running water. Thoroughly clean off any small dirt or impurities that might be clinging to the underside of the leaves to ensure the most delicious steamed perilla dish.
Step 2
After washing, gently shake the perilla leaves to remove excess water, or pat them dry with paper towels. It’s crucial to remove as much moisture as possible, as too much water can dilute the flavor of the seasoning.
Step 3
Finely chop the red chili pepper after removing the stem and seeds; the red color will make the steamed dish visually appealing. Peel and thinly slice the onion. The sweetness of the onion will meld beautifully with the perilla leaves, creating a richer flavor profile.
Step 4
Now, let’s make the delicious seasoning sauce! In a bowl, combine 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp plum extract, 1 Tbsp minced scallions, 1 Tbsp minced garlic, 1 Tbsp sesame oil, and 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds. Mix everything well until the ingredients are evenly incorporated, creating an aromatic and flavorful sauce.
Step 5
Take about 5 perilla leaves, stack them, and spread the prepared seasoning sauce evenly over them using a brush or a spoon. Ensure the seasoning is applied uniformly to each leaf, as this is key to achieving the best taste. Be mindful not to apply too much, as it could make the dish too salty.
Step 6
Arrange the seasoned perilla leaves in layers in a pot and cover with a lid. Steam over low heat for 3 to 5 minutes until the perilla leaves are tender and wilted. Be careful not to overcook, as they can become too mushy. Serve hot with your favorite rice for a delightful meal!
