Main Ingredients

  • 1 bunch fresh crown daisy (approx. 250g)
  • 10cm white part of scallion
  • 1,000ml water (about 5 cups)
  • 1 Tbsp coarse salt (for blanching)

Spicy & Sweet Seasoning

  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce (regular)
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce (for soup)
  • 1/2 Tbsp red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds (lightly crushed for enhanced flavor)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

I picked up a bunch of fresh crown daisy from the market. Just looking at it makes me feel the spring scent!

Step 1

Step 2

Carefully examine the crown daisy and gently remove any yellowed or wilted leaves. If the stems are too tough, you can trim them slightly.

Step 2

Step 3

Rinse the trimmed crown daisy thoroughly under running water two or three times to remove any dirt or dust. You don’t need to dry it completely.

Step 3

Step 4

In a wide pot, bring 1,000ml (about 5 cups) of water to a rolling boil over high heat with 1 Tbsp of coarse salt. Adding salt helps maintain the vibrant green color of the crown daisy.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the water is boiling vigorously, add the prepared crown daisy. Use chopsticks or a similar utensil to gently press it down and blanch for about 2 minutes. It’s crucial to blanch just until the stems are slightly tender. Over-blanching will cause the leaves to become limp and lose their fresh flavor, so be careful!

Step 5

Step 6

Immediately remove the blanched crown daisy and rinse it under cold water twice. This step helps to cool down the greens, preserve their bright green color, and enhance their crisp texture.

Step 6

Step 7

Gently gather the crown daisy from the cold water and squeeze out excess water with your hands. Too much water can dilute the seasoning. Once drained, cut the crown daisy into three manageable pieces. Avoid cutting them too finely, as they might become mushy.

Step 7

Step 8

Finely chop the white part of the scallion. The chopped scallion will add a fragrant aroma to the salad.

Step 8

Step 9

Transfer the squeezed crown daisy and chopped scallion into a large bowl. It’s time to add the delicious seasonings.

Step 9

Step 10

Add 1 Tbsp of regular soy sauce to provide a savory depth of flavor.

Step 10

Step 11

Add 1 Tbsp of soy sauce for soup to enrich the taste. Using both types of soy sauce creates a more complex flavor profile.

Step 11

Step 12

Add 1 Tbsp of sesame seeds for a nutty aroma. Lightly crushing the sesame seeds before adding them will release more of their fragrance.

Step 12

Step 13

Add 1/2 Tbsp of red pepper flakes for a touch of spiciness. Feel free to increase this amount if you prefer more heat.

Step 13

Step 14

Finally, drizzle 1 Tbsp of sesame oil for a rich flavor and glossy finish. It pairs beautifully with the fragrant crown daisy.

Step 14

Step 15

Now, gently toss everything together with your hands, ensuring the seasonings are evenly distributed. Be gentle to avoid mashing the crown daisy. Your fragrant and delicious seasoned crown daisy salad is ready!
