Main Ingredients

  • 6-7 Red Oranges
  • 2 Yellow Oranges

Additional Ingredients

  • 1kg Prepared Orange Segments

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Thoroughly cleaning the oranges is key for a great marmalade. Begin by soaking the oranges in cold water. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of baking soda over them and let them sit for about 5-10 minutes. Then, gently rub the orange peels with your hands to remove any surface impurities. Rinse the oranges clean and pat them completely dry with paper towels. Trim off both ends of the oranges. Ensure the container you’ll use for the segments is completely dry to prevent spoilage.

Step 1

Step 2

Now, let’s peel the oranges. Stand each orange upright on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, carefully peel the skin from top to bottom in a downward motion, rotating the orange as you go to remove all the peel. Once peeled, cut the oranges in half. Remove the white pith from the center, as it can add bitterness. Then, cut the orange segments into bite-sized pieces, about 1.5-2 cm.

Step 2

Step 3

The red oranges have a distinct deep red interior, making them easily distinguishable from the yellow oranges. Combining both types creates a visually appealing and flavorful orange marmalade.

Step 3

Step 4

Measure out 1kg of the prepared orange segments. Use an equal weight of white sugar, which is 1kg. Using a clean, dry wooden spoon or spatula, stir the orange segments and sugar together until well combined. Let the mixture sit for 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally to ensure the sugar dissolves completely. This process helps the sugar melt and meld with the orange pulp.

Step 4

Step 5

Transferring marmalade into narrow-necked glass jars can be messy. Here’s a helpful tip: use a clean, empty plastic water bottle. Cut the top half off the bottle. Then, position the cut opening over the mouth of your glass jar, making sure it’s slightly smaller than the jar’s opening. This creates a makeshift funnel, allowing you to pour the marmalade cleanly without spills.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the marmalade is in the jar using the bottle funnel, it’s time to let it mature. First, store the jar at room temperature for 1-2 days to allow the sugar to fully dissolve and the flavors to meld. Afterward, transfer the jar to the refrigerator and let it age for at least 3 days. Your delicious orange marmalade will then be ready to enjoy! Serve it chilled with cold water or sparkling water for a refreshing orange soda, or stir into hot water for a comforting, fragrant orange tea.
