Main Ingredients- 2 sheets of rectangular fish cake
- 5-6 fresh perilla leaves
- 1/2 small onion
- 1 handful of garlic cloves (sliced)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare all your ingredients. Cut the fish cakes into 1cm wide strips. Slice the onion into similar-sized strips. Wash the perilla leaves, pat them dry, and thinly slice them into about 0.5cm widths. Thinly slice the garlic cloves.
Step 2
Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a pan over low heat. Add the sliced garlic and stir-fry gently for about 1 minute until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
Step 3
Once the garlic starts to turn lightly golden, increase the heat to high and add the sliced onion. Stir-fry together for about 1 minute until the onion becomes translucent, bringing out its natural sweetness.
Step 4
Add the prepared fish cakes and stir-fry quickly over high heat for about 30 seconds. This will coat the fish cakes in oil, making them chewier.
Step 5
Pour 2 tablespoons of water into the pan. This will prevent the seasonings from burning and help keep the fish cakes moist.
Step 6
Now, add 0.5 tablespoon of oyster sauce and 1 tablespoon of soy sauce. Stir-fry well over high heat for about 2 minutes until the sauce coats all the ingredients. The sauce should thicken slightly.
Step 7
Turn off the heat and finally add the thinly sliced perilla leaves. Gently mix them in. The key here is to mix them after turning off the heat to preserve the fresh aroma of the perilla leaves. Taste and add a pinch of salt if needed to adjust the seasoning to your preference.
Step 8
Voila! Your delicious perilla leaf fish cake stir-fry is ready. It looks so appetizing! It’s delicious served over hot rice as a donburi, or packed as a lunchbox side dish that everyone will surely love. 🙂
