How to Make Passion Fruit Syrup (Baekhyang-gwa) and Refreshing Passion Fruit Ade
Passion fruit, often called the queen of tropical fruits, boasts a unique sweet and tangy flavor and aroma that is simply delightful when made into syrup and enjoyed as a refreshing ade. Experience a special homemade beverage that’s perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients- 1 kg ripe passion fruits
- Sugar (equal weight to the passion fruit pulp)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, properly ripening the passion fruit is key. If the fruits are fresh, leaving them at room temperature for about two days will cause their skins to wrinkle, deepening the sweetness and flavor of the pulp. Wrinkled skin is a sign of ripeness, so use them when they reach this stage.
Step 2
Gently rinse the ripe passion fruits under running water. For an extra clean, lightly soak them in a solution of water and a little vinegar, then rinse again. This helps remove any surface impurities more effectively.
Step 3
Thoroughly pat the rinsed passion fruits dry with paper towels. Any remaining moisture can affect the shelf life of your syrup, so ensure they are completely dry.
Step 4
Cut the passion fruits in half and use a spoon to scrape out all the pulp and seeds into a clean bowl. You’ll be using the seeds along with the pulp.
Step 5
Add sugar to the passion fruit pulp, using an equal weight of sugar to pulp. While a 1:1 ratio is standard, you can reduce the sugar to 70-80% if you prefer less sweetness. However, if you use less sugar, it’s best to consume the syrup relatively quickly.
Step 6
After adding the sugar, resist the urge to stir immediately. Let it sit for a while to allow the sugar to begin dissolving naturally with the fruit’s moisture. You’ll gently mix it later.
Step 7
Leave the mixture at room temperature for about 2 to 3 hours, allowing the sugar to dissolve into the fruit pulp. Stir gently occasionally. Be mindful not to leave it for too long, as it could start fermenting.
Step 8
Prepare your glass jar for storing the passion fruit syrup. Wash it thoroughly and then sterilize it by boiling it in water. Make sure the jar is completely dry inside and out before use; this is crucial for preserving the syrup.
Step 9
Once the sugar has mostly dissolved, carefully transfer the passion fruit pulp and syrup into the sterilized glass jar. Avoid filling the jar to the very brim; leave a little headspace.
Step 10
Seal the jar tightly and refrigerate the passion fruit syrup for 2 to 3 days to let it mature. This aging process allows the flavors to meld beautifully, resulting in a richer, more complex taste.
Step 11
The finished passion fruit syrup can be enjoyed mixed with yogurt or water, but for a truly refreshing summer drink, nothing beats an ade made with sparkling water! Add your desired amount of syrup to a glass filled with ice.
Step 12
Top up the glass generously with cold sparkling water. Give it a gentle stir, and your homemade passion fruit ade is ready. It’s incredibly simple!
Step 13
This homemade passion fruit ade is not only visually appealing with its unique color and delightful aroma, but the delightful texture of the chewy passion fruit pulp also adds to the enjoyment. Savor every sip!
