Fragrant Namul Rice with Perilla Oil
Fragrant Namul Rice with Perilla Oil
Create a simple yet incredibly delicious Namul Rice using various leftover vegetables from your fridge! The nutty aroma of perilla oil combined with the fresh scent of namul will elevate your meal.
Main Ingredients
- Assorted namul (vegetables) of your choice (e.g., spinach, soybean sprouts, water parsley)
- 5 servings of cooked rice (warm)
- 1 Tbsp perilla oil (deul-gireum)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil (cham-gireum)
- Gochujang (Korean chili paste) to taste
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
In a pot with some depth (or you can use a rice cooker), add a small amount of water, just enough to moisten the bottom and not submerse the rice. Evenly spread your prepared assorted namul over the bottom. You can also steam the namul separately before adding.
Step 2
Carefully layer the 5 servings of warm, cooked rice on top of the namul. Avoid packing the rice down too tightly, as this will help it cook evenly and remain moist.
Step 3
Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and heat over very low heat for approximately 15 minutes. This gentle steaming process allows the rice and namul to absorb each other’s moisture and aromas, resulting in a tender dish. Be mindful of the heat to prevent burning.
Step 4
After 15 minutes, lift the lid and gently mix the warm rice and namul together with a rice paddle or spatula. Be careful not to mash the vegetables. Finally, drizzle in 1 Tbsp of fragrant perilla oil and 1 Tbsp of sesame oil for an extra layer of rich flavor.
Step 5
Serve the well-mixed namul rice in bowls. For an extra kick, you can add a bit of gochujang and mix it in, or enjoy it with your favorite side dishes. This simple yet healthy and flavorful namul rice is a delightful meal!
