Basil pesto, originating from Genoa, Italy, is a sauce with a refreshing basil aroma and nutty pine nuts, making it incredibly versatile for spreading on bread, as a sandwich spread, salad dressing, or pasta sauce. Today, we’ll be making basil cream pane pasta using a convenient meal kit.

Cooking Instructions

First, I’ve prepared a Freshness meal kit. This meal kit should be kept refrigerated and can be cooked in approximately 15 minutes, making it very convenient.

The meal kit includes a hard roll (for the bread bowl), linguine pasta, onion, minced garlic, cream sauce, Parmesan cheese, herb salt, and basil pesto for extra flavor. Follow the included instructions step-by-step. First, we need to toast the hard roll, which will serve as our bread bowl. Using an oven or air fryer will make it extra crispy. If you don’t have either, toast it in a pan over medium heat for about 2 minutes.

Now, let’s prepare the hard roll to become our pasta bowl. Carefully slice off the top part of the bread like a lid, and then gently scoop out the soft interior to create a space for the pasta. Be careful not to break the bread while hollowing it out.

If using an air fryer, line the basket with parchment paper, place the hollowed-out hard roll inside, and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 5 minutes. This will ensure the bread is perfectly crisp.

The hard roll is now beautifully golden brown and wonderfully crisp! We’re all set to start making the pasta.

In a pot, bring 1400ml of water (about 9.5 paper cups) to a rolling boil. Add the linguine pasta and cook for 8 minutes until al dente. Make sure to time the pasta correctly.

Heat a wide pan over high heat for 1 minute, then add 1 Tbsp of cooking oil. Add the minced onion, minced garlic, and herb salt, and sauté over medium heat for about 2 minutes until fragrant. Sautéing until the garlic and onion release their aromas into the oil is key.

To the sautéed onion and garlic, add the 2 packets of cream sauce and 1 cup of the reserved pasta water. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then add the cooked linguine pasta. Stir-fry over medium heat for about 3 minutes until the pasta is well coated with the sauce. Finally, turn off the heat and stir in the basil pesto generously until everything is well combined.

The vibrant green of the basil pesto blends with the cream sauce, creating an appetizing color. Stir in half of the Parmesan cheese. If the sauce seems too thick at this stage, you can add a little more reserved pasta water to reach your desired consistency. However, it’s best to aim for a slightly less thick sauce initially, as it will naturally thicken as it sits.
