Essential Ingredients

  • 200g Beef for Steak (choose your favorite cut like sirloin or tenderloin)
  • 1 bunch Scallions (about 10 stalks, finely chopped)
  • 5-6 cloves Garlic (thinly sliced)
  • 2 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 1 cup Rice (approx. 180g, rinsed and drained, or day-old rice)
  • 1 Tbsp Commercial Tsuyu (or 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce + 1/2 tsp sugar)
  • Pinch of Salt (for steak seasoning and rice)
  • Pinch of Black Pepper (for steak seasoning and rice)

Simple Sauce

  • 3 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1.5 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili powder, adjust to spice preference)
  • 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Toasted Sesame Seeds (for extra nutty aroma!)
  • 1-2 pcs Cheongyang Peppers (optional, finely chopped for a spicy kick)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

The start to a delicious rice bowl is preparing the rice! Rinse 1 cup of rice thoroughly to remove excess starch, then drain it well in a sieve. Letting the rice soak for about 30 minutes before cooking will result in fluffier and tastier grains.

Pat dry the steak beef with paper towels to remove excess moisture. Lightly brush with olive oil, then generously season with salt and pepper. Let it marinate for a bit to tenderize the meat.

Now, let’s stir-fry the rice! Add 1 Tbsp of butter and 1 Tbsp of minced garlic to your pot or pan over medium-low heat. Sauté until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.

Add the soaked rice and 1 Tbsp of tsuyu to the sautéed garlic and butter. Stir-fry until the rice grains become slightly translucent. The tsuyu will coat the rice, infusing it with rich flavor.

Add water in a 1:1 ratio with the rice (1 cup rice to 1 cup water) and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and cook for 10 minutes, then lower the heat to low and let it steam for 5 minutes. The water will absorb, creating a delicious rice bowl.

While the rice is steaming, we’ll cook the marinated steak. Heat 1 Tbsp of butter in a pan, sprinkle a little salt and pepper, then place the steak in the pan. Sear both sides until nicely browned and cooked to your desired doneness. The key is a nicely seared exterior with a juicy interior.

It’s important to cook the steak quickly over high heat. Sear each side for just 1-2 minutes on high heat to achieve a medium-rare finish with a perfectly seared crust. Adjust the cooking time based on your preference.
