Introducing a super simple salted shrimp salad recipe that takes just 5 minutes to make – perfect for when your appetite is lagging! This is the saeujeot sauce I prepared in advance before the bossam (boiled pork) arrived. I used to make this savory and delicious side dish often in the past, enjoying it simply with rice or dipping my bossam and supyuk (boiled pork belly) in it. Salted shrimp, in particular, has a fantastic pairing with pork and is not only essential for kimchi but also adds a depth of umami to various other dishes. This recipe uses tablespoon measurements, making it easy for anyone to follow, so let’s get started right away!

Main Ingredients
  • 2 Tbsp Saeujeot (salted shrimp), focusing on the solids
  • 2 Tbsp Green Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 Cheongyang Pepper, seeds removed and finely chopped

Seasoning Ingredients
  • 2 Tbsp Mirin (or cooking wine)
  • 0.5 Tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 0.5 Tbsp Maesil Cheong (green plum syrup)
  • 0.5 Tbsp Gochugaru (red pepper flakes)
  • 0.7 Tbsp Sesame Seeds, ground

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the salted shrimp, picking out the solids. Finely chop the cheongyang pepper after removing the seeds. Cut the green onion in half lengthwise, then slice it thinly.

Step 2

In a bowl, combine the prepared salted shrimp solids with 2 tablespoons of mirin and 0.5 tablespoon of minced garlic. Mix them well.

Step 3

To gently balance the saltiness and add a touch of sweetness, add 0.5 tablespoon of maesil cheong. While a little sugar or vinegar can be added, maesil cheong helps to reduce any fishy odor and adjust the saltiness effectively.

Step 4

Finally, add about 0.7 tablespoon of ground sesame seeds for a nutty flavor. Gently mix all the ingredients together, and your delicious salted shrimp salad is ready!

Step 5

You can add a drizzle of sesame oil to the salted shrimp salad if you like. However, if you’re using it as a dipping sauce for bossam or supyuk, omitting the sesame oil is recommended to reduce richness and maintain a clean taste. Of course, feel free to adjust it according to your preference.

Step 6

This easily made salted shrimp salad has a savory flavor that stimulates the appetite, making it an excellent summer side dish. Having this prepared will provide a reliable banchan (side dish) for your meals.

Step 7

You can add more cheongyang peppers according to your taste, or include finely chopped red bell peppers for added color. The mirin helps to eliminate any fishy smell from the pork and balances the saltiness, resulting in a sauce with a pleasant broth that’s perfect for dipping bossam or supyuk.

Step 8

When your appetite is low during the summer, try adding a little of this salted shrimp sauce to your wraps. It’s refreshing and aids digestion. It’s a special side dish that’s less prone to spoilage, so make sure to try it this summer! You’ve worked hard today. Have a relaxing evening!
