Let’s get started on this delicious fish cake stir-fry that anyone can confidently make!
Main Ingredients- 1 package (8 sheets) of square fish cakes
- 1/2 onion
- A little bit of green onion (chopped)
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
Seasoning Ingredients- 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 0.5 Tbsp Cheongyang chili powder (adjust to taste)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- A little bit of sesame oil
- A little bit of sesame seeds
- 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 0.5 Tbsp Cheongyang chili powder (adjust to taste)
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- A little bit of sesame oil
- A little bit of sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare 1 package (8 sheets) of square fish cakes. Cut each fish cake in half lengthwise, then slice them into bite-sized pieces. Cutting them this way helps the seasoning penetrate well and improves the texture when chewing.
Step 2
Heat a pan over medium-low heat, add 1 Tbsp of olive oil, chopped green onion, and minced garlic. Stir-fry until the green onion and garlic are fragrant and lightly browned, creating an aromatic infused oil. Be careful not to burn them.
Step 3
Once the fragrant oil is ready, add all the sliced fish cakes and increase the heat to medium. Stir-fry the fish cakes to remove excess moisture, which will enhance their chewy texture.
Step 4
After stir-frying the fish cakes for a bit, add 1.5 Tbsp of soy sauce and 0.5 Tbsp of Cheongyang chili powder. Continue to stir-fry everything together. The Cheongyang chili powder adds a spicy kick that cuts through any richness. (If using Cheongyang chili powder, it will be quite spicy, so if you are sensitive to heat, use regular chili powder or reduce the amount. If you prefer a milder dish, you can omit the chili powder.)
Step 5
For an even crispier texture, it’s best to stir-fry the julienned onion separately. Lightly oil another pan and stir-fry the onion over high heat quickly. You want to cook it just until it’s slightly softened but still retains its crispness; this prevents it from becoming watery.
Step 6
Add the separately stir-fried onion to the pan with the fish cakes and mix well. Finally, drizzle in a little sesame oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Give it a final quick stir to combine everything evenly, and your delicious stir-fried fish cakes are ready! (If you prefer a sweeter taste, you can add about 0.5 Tbsp of sugar or 1 Tbsp of corn syrup while stir-frying for an even more delightful flavor.)
