Main Ingredients

  • 1 Emperor mushroom (large and plump)
  • 1 Bell pepper
  • 6 cloves whole Garlic
  • 1/3 Onion

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the vegetables to be used with the Emperor mushroom: bell pepper, whole garlic, and onion. Wash them thoroughly under running water to remove any dirt or debris, then pat them dry with a paper towel. (If using calcium powder, wash according to product instructions and ensure it’s well-drained.)

Step 1

Step 2

Slice the star, the Emperor mushroom, crosswise into approximately 1.5cm thick pieces for easy eating. Slicing them not too thinly will ensure a satisfying chew, similar to a steak.

Step 2

Step 3

Looking at the cross-section of the sliced Emperor mushroom, you’ll see a wide and appetizing surface, much like a steak, which enhances the anticipation of the dish.

Step 3

Step 4

Slice the onion into thick strips, about 0.5cm wide. If sliced too thinly, they might become mushy when cooked, so maintaining a good thickness is recommended.

Step 4

Step 5

Cut off the tough base end of the whole garlic cloves with a knife. This makes peeling easier and ensures the garlic cooks to a tender consistency.

Step 5

Step 6

Cut the bell pepper in half, remove the seeds and white pith from the inside. Then, chop it into bite-sized cubes, about 2-3cm.

Step 6

Step 7

In a large bowl, combine the prepared Emperor mushroom, onion, bell pepper, and whole garlic. Drizzle with 3 tablespoons of olive oil and gently toss to coat all ingredients evenly. Mix lightly so the vegetables don’t get bruised.

Step 7

Step 8

Next, add 1 tablespoon of bamboo salt and 1 teaspoon of black pepper to enhance the flavor. Put on disposable gloves and toss again to ensure the seasoning is well distributed. Taste and adjust the salt and pepper amounts to your preference.

Step 8

Step 9

Once all ingredients are well-seasoned, spread them evenly on an oven pan or baking dish. Place in a preheated oven at 150°C (300°F) and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the whole garlic cloves are tender. Keep in mind that the mushrooms will release moisture during baking, so the pan might get wet.

Step 9

Step 10

Transfer the deliciously baked Emperor mushroom steak to a nice plate. I personally paired it with a refreshing onion salad, and the combination was excellent. Feel free to serve it with your favorite salad or side dishes.

Step 10

Step 11

Cut into slices with a knife, just like a real steak, for an even more satisfying meal. While it might look small in pictures, the Emperor mushroom is surprisingly large, with a wonderfully chewy texture and deep flavor. It’s a simple yet special dish, so be sure to try making it at home!
