Seasoning & Other Ingredients- Minced garlic: 1/2 Tbsp (optional)
- Fish sauce or soup soy sauce: 1 Tbsp
- Sesame oil: 2 Tbsp
- Salt: to taste
- Water: 1400ml (approx. 7 cups)
- Minced garlic: 1/2 Tbsp (optional)
- Fish sauce or soup soy sauce: 1 Tbsp
- Sesame oil: 2 Tbsp
- Salt: to taste
- Water: 1400ml (approx. 7 cups)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, soak the dried seaweed in water until fully rehydrated, which usually takes about 10-15 minutes. Rinse the rehydrated seaweed thoroughly under running water. Squeeze out excess water and cut it into bite-sized pieces. Place the prepared seaweed and the canned tuna into a pot. You can include the tuna’s liquid for added umami, or drain it if you prefer a cleaner taste.
Step 2
Add 2 Tbsp of sesame oil and 1 Tbsp of fish sauce (or soup soy sauce) to the pot. Sauté the seaweed and tuna over medium-low heat for about 1-2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Adding 1/2 Tbsp of minced garlic at this stage will enhance the aroma and flavor even further.
Step 3
Pour 1400ml (about 7 cups) of water into the pot with the sautéed ingredients. Using anchovy and kelp broth will yield a deeper flavor, but plain water works perfectly well too.
Step 4
Bring the soup to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for another 5-10 minutes, or until the soup becomes slightly milky and the seaweed is tender. Finally, season with salt to taste. Since you’ve already added fish sauce or soup soy sauce, adjust the seasoning gradually. A pinch of black pepper can also be added according to your preference. Enjoy your wonderfully simple and delicious Tuna Seaweed Soup, served warm!
