Easy Steamed Cabbage in the Microwave
Steaming Cabbage with a Microwave
Let’s steam cabbage easily and conveniently using the microwave. This method yields tender, slightly sweet cabbage perfect for various dishes.
Ingredients- 1/4 head of cabbage
- 1 tsp vinegar
- 100-150ml water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Start by preparing your cabbage. For steaming, choose a fresh, firm head of cabbage.
Step 2
Cut the cabbage into manageable pieces for steaming. Quartering or cutting into sixths works well, but you can adjust the size based on your preference.
Step 3
Remove any wilted or yellow outer leaves from the cut cabbage pieces. Rinse them thoroughly under cold running water. After a light draining, place the cabbage in a microwave-safe dish and add enough water to cover it about halfway.
Step 4
Add 1 teaspoon of vinegar to the water. Let the cabbage soak for 10 to 20 minutes. This step helps to tenderize the cabbage and reduce any slight bitterness.
Step 5
Gently drain the cabbage from the vinegar water. Separate the leaves and arrange them in a microwave-safe bowl. Add fresh water again, ensuring about one-third of the cabbage leaves are submerged. This steam bed is crucial for cooking.
Step 6
Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap. To allow steam to escape and prevent pressure buildup, poke several small holes in the plastic wrap using a fork. Your dish is now ready for the microwave.
Step 7
Place the covered bowl in the microwave and cook on high for 8 minutes. Cooking time may vary depending on the thickness of the cabbage and your microwave’s power. It’s a good idea to check after 7 minutes and add more time if needed.
Step 8
Carefully remove the bowl from the microwave once the cooking is complete. Be cautious of hot steam! You can check if the cabbage is tender by piercing it with a chopstick or fork; it should slide in easily. Enjoy your perfectly steamed cabbage as a side dish, in wraps, or with your favorite dipping sauce!
