Ochazuke Ingredients- 1 packet of store-bought Ochazuke furikake (or regular furikake)
- 150ml water (or steeped green tea)
- 1 bowl of warm rice
- 1 fresh Mentaiko (pollock roe)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, if your Ochazuke furikake contains green tea powder, you won’t need separate green tea bags. Take advantage of the convenience of pre-made furikake.
Step 2
Sprinkle the Ochazuke furikake evenly over the warm rice. If you are using regular furikake, prepare some steeped green tea in a moment.
Step 3
(If using regular furikake) Prepare steeped green tea, either warm or cold, according to your preference. The subtle aroma of green tea enhances the flavor of the ochazuke.
Step 4
It’s best to use low-salt or unsalted mentaiko. If your mentaiko is very salty, soak it in water for a while to reduce the saltiness. This will help bring out the natural savory flavor of the roe.
Step 5
I pan-fried the mentaiko in butter until golden brown. The richness of the butter further enhances the flavor of the mentaiko, making it even more delicious. You can also enjoy it raw.
Step 6
Serve the warm rice in a bowl, shaping it into a nice round mound. This makes the dish look more appealing.
Step 7
When using furikake specifically designed for Ochazuke, it already contains green tea powder, so you don’t need to brew green tea separately. This is incredibly convenient.
Step 8
Now, pour in 150ml of hot water. If you used regular furikake, pour in the prepared steeped green tea at this point. The warm water or green tea will soften the rice and bring out the flavors of the furikake.
Step 9
Place the cooked mentaiko attractively on top of the rice, and your simple yet satisfying one-bowl meal, Mentaiko Ochazuke, is complete! Enjoy a delicious meal that can be prepared quickly on busy days. Enjoy your meal today!
