Apple Pie Ingredients- 1 apple (medium size)
- 6 slices of bread
- 1 Tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Apple Filling Seasoning- 5 Tbsp sugar
- 1-2 tsp cinnamon powder (adjust to taste)
- 0.5 Tbsp lemon juice
- 1 Tbsp water
- 5 Tbsp sugar
- 1-2 tsp cinnamon powder (adjust to taste)
- 0.5 Tbsp lemon juice
- 1 Tbsp water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, wash the apple thoroughly under running water. Peel the skin completely, remove the core, and dice it into small pieces about 0.5cm in size. Cutting them too large will take longer to cook, so achieving a suitable size is important.
Step 2
When you’ve nearly finished dicing the apple, place the diced apple and 5 tablespoons of sugar into a large bowl. Allowing the apples to macerate in sugar will add delicious flavor and draw out moisture, making them easier to cook down. (Tip: Instead of adding all the sugar at once after dicing the apples, adding it midway helps the sugar permeate the apples better.)
Step 3
Add the remaining diced apples and mix well so that the sugar and apples are evenly combined. Let it sit for a while for the apples to soak in the sugar.
Step 4
Heat a pan over medium-low heat and add 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter, melting it completely. The butter’s richness will further enhance the apple’s flavor.
Step 5
Add all the sugar-macerated apples to the melted butter in the pan. Stir to prevent the apples from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
Step 6
While sautéing the apples, sprinkle 1-2 teaspoons of cinnamon powder evenly over them. Use 2 teaspoons if you love a strong cinnamon flavor, or 1 teaspoon for a subtler aroma. (Tip: I personally love cinnamon, so I added quite a bit, which resulted in a rather intense flavor. If this is your first time, start with 1 teaspoon.)
Step 7
Cook over medium-low heat until the apples soften and the sugar melts, naturally releasing moisture. Stir occasionally with a spatula to prevent the apples from burning.
Step 8
Once the apples have released a good amount of moisture, drizzle about 0.5 tablespoons of lemon juice around the edge of the pan to add a refreshing touch.
Step 9
Continue to cook until the liquid has mostly evaporated and the apples are glossy, about 5-7 more minutes. Avoid overcooking, as the apples can become mushy; it’s best to retain a slight bite. Your delicious apple filling is now ready!
Step 10
Now, let’s make the apple pies! Flatten each of the 6 bread slices using a rolling pin or a soju bottle. Flattening them helps the pie seal better when folded and results in a prettier shape.
Step 11
Neatly trim off the hard crusty edges of the flattened bread slices. (Tip: You can use the crusts, but trimming them off leads to a softer and neater pie.)
Step 12
In a small bowl, whisk 1 egg with a tiny splash of water (about 1 teaspoon) to create an egg wash. This egg wash will give the pie surface a delicious golden-brown color when baked.
Step 13
On one side of the bread slice that will be the top of the pie, make thin scores about 1cm inwards from the edge, leaving the very edge intact. (Refer to the photo below for an easier understanding of this step.) After scoring, brush the egg wash evenly over the inner part of the pie, the side without the scores.
Step 14
On the side brushed with egg wash, place a moderate amount of the prepared sweet apple filling. Avoid overfilling, as the filling might leak out; leave a small border clear of the filling.
Step 15
Carefully fold the bread slice in half over the apple filling. The scored side will naturally become the top of your pie.
Step 16
Using a fork, press down firmly along the edges of the pie. This pressing action seals the apple filling inside, preventing it from leaking out and firmly securing the pie shape. Press down thoroughly to seal.
Step 17
Repeat the same process for all 6 bread slices, and you’ll have your beautifully shaped apple pies. They look so appetizing already, don’t they?
Step 18
Now, carefully brush the remaining egg wash over the top surface of the pies, the scored side. Brushing the top with egg wash will give it a more appealing shine and color after baking.
Step 19
This is the final step! Bake them until golden brown using an air fryer, oven, or even a frying pan. If using an air fryer, bake at 180°C (350°F) for 15 minutes. For an oven, bake at 180°C (350°F) for about 10-12 minutes. If using a frying pan, lightly oil it and cook over low heat, flipping occasionally until golden brown on both sides. The finished apple pies will have a crispy exterior, a soft and moist interior, and a wonderful combination of sweet apple and cinnamon flavors! They won’t be dry or hard, but delightfully soft, making them a hit with everyone, young and old. 🙂
