Easy Braised Potatoes (Gamja Jorim) – Sweet, Savory, and Delicious
Simple & Delicious Braised Potatoes for a Perfect Side Dish
I spotted some fresh potatoes at the supermarket early this morning and was inspired to make braised potatoes! It turned out to be a wonderful success, so I wanted to share this recipe with you. This dish is a fantastic addition to any meal, offering a delightful balance of savory soy sauce, subtle sweetness, and tender potatoes. It’s a crowd-pleaser and perfect for quick weeknight dinners. Let’s get cooking!
Main Ingredients- 6-7 medium potatoes
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2-3 Tbsp corn syrup or honey (adjust sweetness to taste)
- Sesame seeds, for garnish (to taste)
Optional Ingredients- 1-2 Tbsp cooking oil or olive oil (for added flavor)
- 1-2 Scallions, chopped (for color and freshness)
- 1-2 Tbsp cooking oil or olive oil (for added flavor)
- 1-2 Scallions, chopped (for color and freshness)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, wash and peel the potatoes. Cut them into bite-sized pieces; larger pieces will help prevent them from breaking apart during cooking. Place the cut potatoes in a bowl of cold water and soak for at least 10 minutes to remove excess starch. This step is crucial for preventing the potatoes from sticking together or becoming mushy. Drain the potatoes well. Transfer the drained potatoes to a pot or deep pan. Add 3 Tbsp soy sauce, 2-3 Tbsp corn syrup (or honey), and 1-2 Tbsp of cooking oil or olive oil (if using). Finally, add just enough water to partially cover the potatoes, about halfway up their sides.
Step 2
Cover the pot with a lid and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer for 3-5 minutes with the lid on. This initial simmering allows the potatoes to begin absorbing the flavors of the sauce.
Step 3
Remove the lid and continue to simmer over medium-low heat for another 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cook until most of the liquid has evaporated and the sauce has thickened. If the potatoes become very soft and start to break apart when stirred with utensils, try gently shaking the pan instead of stirring. This will help maintain their shape. Once the sauce is almost gone, leaving just a glaze on the potatoes, turn off the heat.
Step 4
Transfer the finished braised potatoes to a serving dish. Sprinkle generously with sesame seeds for garnish. I prefer adding sesame seeds at the end rather than cooking them directly in the pan, as they tend to stick and become difficult to scrape off. Garnishing at the end adds a nice nutty flavor and visual appeal. If you’re using scallions, chop them finely and sprinkle them over the top for added freshness and color. For those who enjoy a bit of heat, you can also add finely chopped chili peppers!
