Main Ingredients

  • 1 can tuna (approx. 150g), drained
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 sheets of dried seaweed (gim), cut for sushi rolls

Rice Seasoning

  • 0.5 Tbsp sesame oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 0.5 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds

Tuna Mayo Filling

  • 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
  • Salt
  • Pinch of black pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, finely chop half an onion. (Chopping it as small as possible makes it easier for children to eat.) Lightly oil a heated pan and add the chopped onion. Sauté over medium-low heat until the onion becomes translucent and releases a sweet aroma. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly. (You can use raw onion if you prefer, but sautéing brings out sweetness and is milder for kids.)

Step 1

Step 2

Drain the oil completely from the canned tuna using a sieve. Place the drained tuna in a bowl. Add the sautéed and cooled onion, 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, a pinch of salt, and a pinch of black pepper.

Step 2

Step 3

Using a spatula or spoon, mix all the ingredients thoroughly until well combined. This creates your delicious tuna mayo filling. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt if needed. If it’s too salty, you can add a little more sautéed onion to balance the flavor.

Step 3

Step 4

Prepare about 1 bowl of warm rice. Fill a rice bowl generously. Season the rice with 0.5 tablespoon of sesame oil, 0.5 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds, and a pinch of salt. Mix well. Taste the seasoned rice and add more salt if it’s too bland, or add more rice if it’s too salty.

Step 4

Step 5

Divide the seasoned rice into two equal portions. Since we’re making two rice balls, divide both the rice and the tuna mayo filling in half. Take one portion of the rice and place about half of the tuna mayo filling on top.

Step 5

Step 6

Gently mold the rice and filling together into a round ball shape. Wrap each shaped rice ball with plastic wrap to help it hold its form. Repeat with the remaining ingredients to make another rice ball.

Step 6

Step 7

Cut the sushi seaweed sheets into appropriate sizes. (Usually, cutting them into 2 or 3 pieces that fit the size of your rice ball works well.) Place the molded rice ball on a piece of seaweed and wrap the seaweed around it, forming a round shape.

Step 7

Step 8

Wrap the seaweed-covered rice ball again tightly with plastic wrap. This helps the seaweed adhere well to the rice ball and keeps its shape firm. Repeat the process for the second rice ball. Let it sit for a bit while you clean up. Once unwrapped, you’ll have shiny and beautifully shaped tuna mayo rice balls.

Step 8

Step 9

Congratulations! Your delicious and satisfying tuna mayo rice balls are ready. Enjoy!
