Main Ingredients- 2 cans Spam (sliced and pan-fried)
- 1/2 onion (finely diced)
- 6 eggs
- 4 sheets of nori seaweed (cut lengthwise in half)
- 2 bowls of warm cooked rice
Seasoning & Extras- Pinch of salt (for egg mixture)
- Pinch of sesame seeds (for rice seasoning)
- 2 tbsp sesame oil (for rice seasoning)
- Pinch of salt (for egg mixture)
- Pinch of sesame seeds (for rice seasoning)
- 2 tbsp sesame oil (for rice seasoning)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, drain the Spam and slice it into 1cm thick pieces. Lightly oil a pan and fry the Spam slices until golden brown on both sides to remove excess grease and enhance flavor. Place the fried Spam on paper towels to drain any remaining oil.
Step 2
Crack the eggs into a bowl, add a pinch of salt to season, and whisk well. For an even smoother omelet, strain the egg mixture through a sieve. Pour the egg mixture into a rectangular pan over low heat and cook to create a thick omelet. Once cooked, cut the omelet into strips that match the length of the Spam slices. (Tip: Using an egg omelet mold can make shaping much easier.)
Step 3
To the warm cooked rice, add 2 tablespoons of sesame oil and a pinch of sesame seeds. Mix gently to combine the seasonings evenly throughout the rice, being careful not to mash the rice grains.
Step 4
We’ll use a clean, empty Spam can as a mold instead of a bamboo sushi mat. Line the Spam can with plastic wrap. Add about one-third of the seasoned rice into the lined can and press it down firmly with your hands or a spatula to create an even layer.
Step 5
Place a slice of the prepared, pan-fried Spam on top of the rice layer. Gently press down to ensure the Spam sits securely on the rice.
Step 6
Next, add a strip of the thick egg omelet on top of the Spam. Press down slightly to help the omelet stay in place on the Spam.
Step 7
Finally, cover the egg omelet with the remaining seasoned rice. Use the plastic wrap to press the top layer down firmly. Ensure the rice and ingredients are tightly packed and form a solid block, mimicking the shape of the can. (Tip: Using the can lid to press down works even better.)
Step 8
Now it’s time to assemble the musubi with the nori seaweed. Place a strip of nori seaweed (shiny side up) and position the molded rice block from the can on top of it.
Step 9
Lightly moisten the edge of the nori with water, or mash a few rice grains to create a sticky paste to help the nori seal. Roll the nori tightly around the rice block, ensuring it’s wrapped firmly so it doesn’t unravel. A snug wrap is key!
Step 10
The Spam Musubi, now tightly wrapped in nori, is ready to be sliced into bite-sized pieces for serving! Slice it just like you would regular sushi rolls. (Tip: Lightly wetting your knife or using a knife wrapped in plastic wrap can help you slice cleanly.)
Step 11
Serve the delicious Spam Musubi immediately, or pack it beautifully into a lunchbox. Enjoy this hearty and satisfying meal!
Step 12
Create a fulfilling and enjoyable mealtime with these nutritious Spam Musubi! It’s a beloved dish for everyone, young and old.
