Tteokbokki Ingredients- 400g Tteokbokki rice cakes (rice or wheat)
- 5 sheets of square fish cakes
- 4 shiitake mushrooms (or your favorite mushrooms)
- 1/2 onion
- 1 handful of green onions
- 2 boiled eggs
Tteokbokki Sauce- 500ml water (2.5 cups)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 3 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 3 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes – adjust for spice level)
- 3 Tbsp corn syrup (adjust for sweetness)
- 500ml water (2.5 cups)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 3 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 3 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes – adjust for spice level)
- 3 Tbsp corn syrup (adjust for sweetness)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, lightly rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes in cold water and drain. Slice the onion and cut the green onions into bite-sized pieces. For the shiitake mushrooms, remove the stems and tear or slice them into manageable pieces.
Step 2
Don’t worry if your rice cakes are hard! Place the 400g of tteokbokki rice cakes into a pot. Add 500ml of water to create the base for your sauce. Stir in 3 tablespoons of gochujang.
Step 3
Now, turn on the heat and add the remaining sauce ingredients. Add 3 tablespoons of soy sauce and 3 tablespoons of corn syrup to balance the flavors. You can substitute corn syrup with rice syrup if you prefer.
Step 4
Peel the 2 boiled eggs and add them whole. Cut the 5 sheets of square fish cakes into four pieces each and add them to the pot. The fish cakes will absorb the sauce as they cook, becoming even more delicious.
Step 5
Add the prepared shiitake mushrooms, chopped green onions, and onion to the pot. The vibrant colors are appealing, and the fragrant mushrooms will elevate the flavor of your Tteokbokki.
Step 6
Now, add the gochugaru for that signature spicy kick. Start with 3 tablespoons, tasting and adding more to suit your desired spice level. You can also mix in some Cheongyang chili flakes for extra heat.
Step 7
Cook over medium heat until the rice cakes are soft and the sauce has thickened. As the sauce reduces, it will coat all the ingredients beautifully. For a redder and richer color, add more gochugaru and continue to simmer. Enjoy your delicious Tteokbokki!
