Main Ingredients

  • 150g fish cakes (eomuk), cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 green onion, chopped
  • 2 Korean green chili peppers, chopped (optional, for spice)
  • 1 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2/3 Tbsp sugar (or corn syrup, or rice syrup)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare your fish cakes. Any type of fish cake will work well for this recipe. Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces that are easy for everyone to eat. Thinly slice the onion. Chop the green onion into small pieces to add aroma, and if you prefer a spicy kick, deseed and chop the Korean green chili peppers.

Step 1

Step 2

Heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and stir-fry gently until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. Once the garlic aroma fills the kitchen, add the prepared fish cakes and stir-fry for about 1-2 minutes until they soften slightly.

Step 2

Step 3

Pour in 50cc of water (about 1/4 cup). Bring it to a gentle boil over medium heat. This step helps to soften the fish cakes and allows them to absorb the flavors of the sauce more effectively.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, add 2 tablespoons of soy sauce for that savory umami flavor. You can adjust the amount of soy sauce depending on the type of fish cake you use and your personal preference.

Step 4

Step 5

Add 2/3 tablespoon of sugar to bring in a touch of sweetness. You can substitute sugar with corn syrup or rice syrup if you prefer. A good balance of sweet and savory is key to a delicious stir-fried fish cake!

Step 5

Step 6

Continue to stir-fry over medium-low heat until the sauce has reduced and thickened, coating the fish cakes nicely. Make sure to stir occasionally to prevent sticking or burning.

Step 6

Step 7

Just before you turn off the heat, drizzle in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. Give everything a final toss to evenly distribute the sesame oil, adding a wonderful nutty aroma to complete this dish.

Step 7

Step 8

And there you have it! A glossy, perfectly seasoned, and wonderfully savory stir-fried fish cake. This dish is incredibly versatile and makes for a fantastic quick side dish that pairs perfectly with a bowl of warm rice. Enjoy!
