Ssamjang Ingredients

  • 1/2 onion
  • 3 cheongyang chili peppers (spicy Korean chilies)
  • 1 red chili pepper
  • 5 cloves garlic
  • 5 Tbsp doenjang (Korean fermented soybean paste)
  • 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 3 Tbsp rice wine or cooking wine
  • 2 Tbsp oligodang (corn syrup) or other liquid sweetener
  • 2 Tbsp dried shrimp powder
  • 2 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds, ground
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

When you feel tired and want a lighter meal, consuming plenty of vegetables is a great idea. Using up leftover vegetables from your fridge, you can make delicious Ssamjang to enjoy a simple yet healthy meal.

Step 1

Step 2

Finely mince the onion. Remove the seeds from the Cheongyang and red chili peppers and mince them as well. Garlic tastes best when minced fresh, so use freshly minced garlic rather than pre-minced garlic for optimal flavor.

Step 2

Step 3

In a bowl, combine 5 Tbsp of doenjang, 1 Tbsp of gochujang, and 3 Tbsp of rice wine. Mix them well. Feel free to adjust the ratio of doenjang and gochujang to your preference for a personalized taste.

Step 3

Step 4

Next, add 2 Tbsp of oligodang and 2 Tbsp of dried shrimp powder. If you don’t have dried shrimp powder, using dried anchovy powder or finely crushed dried anchovies will also work well. Finally, add ground toasted sesame seeds for a nutty aroma, completing your delicious Ssamjang.

Step 4

Step 5

Add the minced onion, Cheongyang chili peppers, red chili pepper, and minced garlic to the Ssamjang mixture. Stir everything together thoroughly until well combined. This simple mixing step results in a wonderful Ssamjang!

Step 5

Step 6

Transfer the finished Ssamjang to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. It’s perfect to enjoy with leafy greens for wraps or ssam-bap, making it a satisfying meal without needing many side dishes. For Ssamjang you plan to eat immediately, mix in 1 Tbsp of sesame oil for extra gloss and nutty flavor.

Step 6

Step 7

For the bell peppers to be served alongside, trim off the top and bottom ends, scoop out the seeds cleanly, and trim the base slightly so they can stand upright nicely for presentation.

Step 7

Step 8

Arrange the prepared bell peppers upright on a plate or tray. Cut the carrot and cucumber into sticks and insert them. Similarly, insert the green chili peppers. Even with this simple preparation, it looks elegant enough to serve at a dinner party. You can also serve it with your favorite dipping sauce in addition to the Ssamjang.

Step 8

Step 9

Well-made Ssamjang truly shines when paired with fresh greens for wraps. It’s also excellent for making ssam-bap. Thanks to the clean yet savory flavor of this Ssamjang, you’ll find yourself eating more vegetables than usual, adding a delightful aspect to your meals. Enjoy your homemade Ssamjang!
