  • Servings : 1 serving
  • Cooking Time : Within 15 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Main Ingredients

  • 1 can Spam (approx. 200g)
  • 1 slice Cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 Carrot
  • Small bunch of Scallions (green parts)
  • 1/4 Onion

Seasoning & Others

  • 1/2 Tbsp Oyster sauce (adjust to taste)
  • Pinch of Black pepper
  • A little Cooking oil
  • 1 bowl of Cooked rice (warm)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, briefly blanch the Spam in boiling water for about 30 seconds to remove excess fat, then drain thoroughly. (This helps reduce saltiness and gives a cleaner taste.) Finely mince the carrot, onion, and scallions. Finely chopping the vegetables ensures they mix well with the rice and provide a pleasant texture.

Step 1

Step 2

Place the minced Spam and chopped vegetables in a pan with a little cooking oil. Stir-fry over medium heat until the vegetables are translucent and the Spam is lightly browned.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the vegetables are cooked, add the oyster sauce and black pepper and continue to stir-fry. The oyster sauce adds umami, and the pepper adds a hint of aroma. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until all ingredients are well combined.

Step 3

Step 4

Remove the fried Spam and vegetable mixture from the pan. Add the warm rice to the same pan and stir-fry. Lightly stir-fry the rice until the grains are separated and slightly toasted.

Step 4

Step 5

Add the fried Spam and vegetable mixture to the rice and mix thoroughly. Use a spatula or spoon to ensure the rice and the mixture are evenly distributed without clumping. It’s important to mix well so the flavors are consistent throughout.

Step 5

Step 6

Take a portion of the seasoned rice into your hand and flatten it. Place a generously sized piece of Spam in the center. (Alternatively, you can add plenty of the cooked Spam and vegetable mixture.)

Step 6

Step 7

Cover the Spam completely with the rice and shape it into a round ball. If the rice is too hot, lightly dampen your hands with water or wear disposable gloves to prevent sticking and shape them nicely. Make them into cute, bite-sized balls for children.

Step 7

Step 8

Arrange the completed Spam musubi attractively in a lunchbox. You can use cookie cutters to make cute shapes from the cheese or use seaweed to create eyes, nose, and mouth for extra appeal. Decorate them as you wish to create a special and delightful lunchbox!
