Main Ingredients- 1 can Spam (small size)
- 1 sheet of Gim (seaweed for sushi rolls)
- 2 cups warm cooked rice
Spam Glaze Sauce- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp mirin (or cooking sake)
- 2 Tbsp water
- 0.5 Tbsp sugar
- A pinch of ginger powder (optional)
Rice Seasoning- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 0.2 tsp salt (a pinch)
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp mirin (or cooking sake)
- 2 Tbsp water
- 0.5 Tbsp sugar
- A pinch of ginger powder (optional)
Rice Seasoning- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 0.2 tsp salt (a pinch)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, take out the Spam and slice it into manageable pieces. Cut the Spam about 1 cm thick and divide it into 4 pieces. This size fits well into a musubi mold. Slice the Spam in half lengthwise, and then in half again.
Step 2
Let’s make the delicious glaze sauce for the Spam. In a small bowl, combine 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp mirin, 2 Tbsp water, and 0.5 Tbsp sugar. Stir well. If you have ginger powder, adding a tiny pinch will enhance the flavor.
Step 3
Heat a pan over medium heat and place the Spam slices. Cook them until they are golden brown on both sides, flipping them over. This step enhances the rich flavor of the Spam.
Step 4
Once the Spam is nicely browned, pour the prepared soy sauce mixture into the pan. Increase the heat to high and quickly reduce the sauce until it coats the Spam and becomes thick and glossy. Reducing the sauce until it’s almost dry is key for great flavor.
Step 5
Now it’s time to season the rice. In a bowl with 2 cups of warm cooked rice, add 1 Tbsp sesame oil and 0.2 tsp of salt (a pinch). Gently mix everything together with a spatula. Even though the Spam is seasoned, seasoning the rice lightly makes the Spam Musubi much more delicious.
Step 6
Prepare your sushi-grade Gim (seaweed sheets). Cut one sheet lengthwise into 4 equal strips. This makes it easier to wrap the Spam Musubi later.
Step 7
Get a clean Spam can or a musubi mold. Line it generously with plastic wrap, making sure the wrap extends over the sides. This will make it very easy to remove the finished musubi from the mold.
Step 8
Place the seasoned rice into the mold lined with plastic wrap. Cover the top with the wrap and press the rice down firmly using your hands or the back of a spoon. Pressing the rice firmly to compact it is important for a well-formed musubi.
Step 9
Arrange the glazed Spam slices evenly on top of the compacted rice. You can gently press them down so they adhere well to the rice layer.
Step 10
Carefully lift the Spam Musubi out of the mold by pulling on the plastic wrap. You should have a neat, layered rectangle of rice and Spam. Check if the shape is holding well.
Step 11
Place one of the pre-cut Gim strips on a clean surface. Position the rice-and-Spam block on top of the Gim strip. Wrap the Gim around the block, similar to how you would wrap a sushi roll, ensuring the edges are sealed.
Step 12
Wrap the entire Gim-covered Spam Musubi tightly with plastic wrap again. This ensures the musubi maintains its shape and looks neat. Repeat this process to make a total of 4 Spam Musubi.
Step 13
Your delicious Teriyaki Spam Musubi is complete! Enjoy it immediately or pack it as a side dish for lunch. It’s a simple yet satisfying treat!
