A Hearty and Satisfying Meal for Kids: Making Spam and Egg Inari Rice Balls
If your children love rice but aren’t keen on sushi, this recipe is perfect for you! You can easily create delicious and satisfying Inari rice balls using store-bought seasoned fried tofu pouches. We skip the seasoning packet that usually comes with Inari sushi kits to highlight the fresh ingredients’ natural flavors. This dish is a lifesaver on busy days when you need a quick and easy meal. It’s also wonderfully versatile, allowing you to adapt it with whatever ingredients you have on hand. While I often buy seasoned pouches because it’s hard to find plain fried tofu where I live, if you’re using plain fried tofu, you’d need to blanch and simmer it in seasoning. This recipe, however, balances both convenience and great taste! It’s an easy-to-make, enjoyable meal that’s perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients- 14 seasoned fried tofu pouches (inari)
- 50g Spam
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 green part of a large green onion
- Pinch of black pepper
- 1.5 cups cooked rice
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the 14 seasoned fried tofu pouches. Place them in a sieve to drain out the liquid seasoning. When filling the pouches with rice, it’s best to gently squeeze out any excess liquid with your hands so the rice stays packed inside and holds its shape.
Step 2
Take the 50g of Spam and mash it finely using a fork. This helps to distribute the flavor evenly within the rice.
Step 3
In a bowl, crack the 2 eggs. Finely chop the green parts of the large green onion and add it to the bowl. Sprinkle in a pinch of black pepper. Whisk everything together until well combined and free of any stringy bits.
Step 4
Heat about 1/2 Tbsp of cooking oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Pour in the mashed Spam and egg mixture. Cook it like scrambled eggs, stirring gently with a spatula or chopsticks once the bottom begins to set, until it’s cooked through and crumbly.
Step 5
Remove the pan from the heat. Add the 1.5 cups of cooked rice, 1 Tbsp of toasted sesame seeds, and 1 Tbsp of sesame oil to the pan. Gently mix everything together until the rice is well seasoned and evenly combined. Be careful not to mash the rice grains.
Step 6
Finally, gently squeeze any remaining liquid from the seasoned fried tofu pouches. Take about a tablespoon of the seasoned rice mixture at a time and carefully stuff it into each pouch. Press the rice gently to fill the pouch completely and shape it into a neat rice ball. Your delicious Spam and Egg Inari Rice Balls are now ready to enjoy!
