Main Ingredients- 250g Tteokbokki rice cakes (about 1.5 cups)
- 2 sheets of square fish cakes
- 1/2 onion, thinly sliced
- 1 stalk of green onion, cut into large pieces
- 2 hard-boiled eggs (optional)
Sauce Ingredients- 3 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 2 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp Corn syrup (or rice syrup)
- 400ml Water (2 cups)
- 3 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 2 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp Corn syrup (or rice syrup)
- 400ml Water (2 cups)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Soak the rice cakes in water for about 10 minutes to soften them. If your rice cakes are hard, soaking them beforehand is key to achieving a chewy yet tender texture. Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3 cm). Slice the onion thinly and cut the green onion into large diagonal pieces.
Step 2
In a pot, combine 400ml of water with 3 Tbsp gochujang, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, 2 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp soy sauce, and 1 Tbsp corn syrup. Stir well to dissolve the ingredients. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium-low and simmer to allow the flavors to meld.
Step 3
Once the sauce is boiling, add the softened rice cakes, sliced fish cakes, and onion. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the rice cakes are tender and the fish cakes and onion are cooked through. Finally, add the large pieces of green onion and the hard-boiled eggs. Simmer for another minute until everything is heated through. This delicious soupy tteokbokki is ready! A pinch of black pepper can be added for extra flavor if desired.
