Forget Subway! Ultra-Simple Homemade Hamburger Recipe: Craft Your Own Burger with Abundant Ingredients and Tips

As the clock ticks towards quitting time, the question ‘What’s for dinner tonight?’ often pops into our heads. If you’re tired of the same old Korean dishes, why not try making homemade hamburgers today? Inspired by the delicious ‘Gundae-ria’ I enjoyed during military training, I decided to embark on a homemade burger adventure! After jotting down the ingredients, I headed straight to the supermarket right after work. The haul cost about 24,000 won. Considering a fast-food burger is around 5,000 won, making more than 5 burgers would already be a great deal! In reality, the ingredients yielded enough to make about 10 burgers with plenty leftover.

  • 2 slices Bread

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Let’s start by preparing the ingredients for the vegetable salad. Thinly and lengthwise shredding the cabbage will make the burger filling easier to handle and improve the texture. Using a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife will help achieve this.

Step 2

Now, let’s work with the sweet corn. When adding it to the cabbage, you’ll notice some liquid from the can (corn liquid). To prevent the salad from becoming too watery, hold your hand over the can opening to catch the corn while draining the liquid. This step ensures a better salad consistency.

Step 3

Time to assemble the burger filling! Combine the shredded cabbage and sweet corn in a bowl. Add ketchup and mayonnaise to your liking and mix well. A pinch of black pepper can be added for extra flavor. Your delicious vegetable salad is now ready!

Step 4

At this point, the realization hits: ‘Wow, this is so much!’ I initially thought I could make about 4 burgers, but looking at the quantity of ingredients, it’s clear we can make significantly more. This thought brings a little flutter of excitement.

Step 5

If you’re not preparing patties from scratch, a frozen hamburger steak is a convenient option. Tteokgalbi (a type of Korean grilled short rib patties) could also work well. Pan-fry the hamburger steak until golden brown on both sides. Placing a slice of cheese on the warm patty will melt slightly and enhance the flavor. The first two burgers were incredibly delicious, but by the third and fourth, it was more a matter of ‘I’ve made them, so I must eat them!’ determination.

Step 6

Let’s start assembling the burger! Place one slice of bread on a plate. Generously spread the prepared vegetable salad over it. This layer helps prevent the bread from becoming soggy and keeps the fresh vegetables crisp.

Step 7

Next, carefully place the golden-brown hamburger steak patty on top of the vegetable salad. To avoid making the bottom bread soggy from the hot patty, an alternative is to place the patty between two layers of salad. This layering technique can enhance the overall flavor experience.

Step 8

The crowning glory of our burger – a freshly fried egg! Place the fried egg on top of the patty. Slightly breaking the yolk to let it ooze adds to the appetizing visual appeal. Doesn’t this look like a truly impressive homemade burger?

Step 9

Finally, place the other slice of bread on top to complete the burger. Gently place the top bun to ensure the ingredients stay neatly inside.

Step 10

The last step: a gentle press! Lightly press down on the burger with your hands. This helps all the components settle in place, making it easier to take a satisfying bite. Enjoy your hearty and delicious custom-made hamburger!
