Delicious Grilled Mackerel (Gogalbi) Made Easy with an Air Fryer
Easy and Delicious Mackerel Dish! Air Fryer Recipe for Golden Gogalbi Grill
Today, Gasijangmi’s home cooking recipe features ‘Gogalbi Gui,’ a universally loved grilled mackerel dish that’s a perfect side for rice, made conveniently in an air fryer. The men in my household always rejoice when fish is served for breakfast, so I make sure each of them gets their own piece of mackerel! While pan-frying with plenty of oil until sizzling is traditional and delicious, I often opt for the air fryer on busy mornings. We cook fish so frequently that we even have a separate air fryer just for fish! ^^;; Gogalbi Gui is not only a fantastic one-dish meal but also an excellent option for when you have guests over. It’s guaranteed to earn rave reviews! I highly recommend it as a side dish for your next home-cooked meal.

- A little green onion
- A little sesame seeds
- Vegetable oil or olive oil, as needed
Seasoning Ingredients- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 tsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp Mirin (rice wine)
- 1/2 tsp Fish sauce (or soy sauce)
- 1 tsp Oligodang (corn syrup) or mulyeot (rice syrup)
- 1 tsp Minced garlic
- 1/2 tsp Sesame oil
- 1/8 tsp Ginger powder (optional, helps remove fishy odor)
- 1/8 tsp Black pepper
- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 tsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp Mirin (rice wine)
- 1/2 tsp Fish sauce (or soy sauce)
- 1 tsp Oligodang (corn syrup) or mulyeot (rice syrup)
- 1 tsp Minced garlic
- 1/2 tsp Sesame oil
- 1/8 tsp Ginger powder (optional, helps remove fishy odor)
- 1/8 tsp Black pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, rinse the prepared mackerel under running water and pat it thoroughly dry with paper towels. This is crucial for removing any fishy smell. Then, use a knife to cut off the head and tail for a neat presentation. Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper and lightly brush it with oil to prevent sticking. Place the mackerel in the basket and brush the top surface with oil as well. Preheat your air fryer to 190°C (375°F) and cook for the first round for about 7 to 8 minutes. Adjust the cooking time based on the thickness of the mackerel.
Step 2
While the mackerel is in its first cooking phase, it’s time to prepare the delicious seasoning. In a bowl, combine gochujang, gochugaru, mirin, fish sauce, oligodang, minced garlic, sesame oil, ginger powder, and black pepper. Mix well until you have a smooth, lump-free sauce. Ensuring all ingredients are thoroughly combined is key.
Step 3
Carefully remove the mackerel from the air fryer after the first cooking stage. Generously and evenly coat both sides of the mackerel with the prepared seasoning sauce. Applying the sauce in two layers will give it a beautiful color and a richer flavor. Return the seasoned mackerel to the air fryer and cook for an additional 4 to 5 minutes at 190°C (375°F). Keep an eye on it to prevent burning.
Step 4
Now, take the beautifully grilled Gogalbi Gui out of the air fryer and arrange it on a serving plate. Finally, sprinkle freshly chopped green onions and toasted sesame seeds on top for both visual appeal and an extra nutty flavor. Your delicious Gogalbi Gui, perfect for a satisfying meal, is now complete! It’s best enjoyed while hot.
