How to Make Flavorful Braised Flatfish
Hello everyone! Today, I’m sharing a recipe for delicious braised flatfish using frozen fillets from Costco. This dish is simple to make and incredibly tasty, making it a wonderful main course. Why not try making it for your next meal?
Main Ingredients- 3 frozen flatfish fillets
- 3 chili peppers (such as Korean green chilies or jalapeños)
- 1 stalk of green onion
- 1/2 to 1 onion (depending on size)
Braising Sauce- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp corn syrup (or rice syrup)
- 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp cooking wine (mirin or similar)
- 3 pinches black pepper
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp corn syrup (or rice syrup)
- 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp cooking wine (mirin or similar)
- 3 pinches black pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
This recipe is for approximately 3 servings. I often use frozen flatfish from Costco because it’s cost-effective, and it’s convenient as it can be used right after thawing.
Step 2
Place the thawed flatfish fillets in a wide pot. Arrange them nicely so they don’t overlap too much, being careful not to break the fish.
Step 3
In a separate bowl, combine all the ingredients for the braising sauce: soy sauce, corn syrup, red pepper flakes, minced garlic, cooking wine, and black pepper. Stir well until the sauce is smooth and well-mixed.
Step 4
Prepare the chili peppers, green onion, and onion by washing them thoroughly and removing any stems or skins.
Step 5
Slice the chili peppers, green onion, and onion. You can slice the chilies and onion thinly or on an angle. Cut the green onion into diagonal pieces. Avoid making the vegetable slices too thick, as they will take longer to cook.
Step 6
Add enough water to the pot with the flatfish so that the fish is partially submerged (about halfway up). If you add too much water, the sauce might become too diluted. Once the water begins to boil, evenly distribute the prepared vegetables over the fish. Cook over medium heat.
Step 7
Pour all of the prepared braising sauce over the fish and vegetables. Cover the pot with a lid and simmer over medium heat for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the flatfish is cooked through and the sauce has reduced slightly. Spooning some of the sauce over the fish occasionally will enhance the flavor.
Step 8
Once the sauce has thickened to your liking and the fish is cooked, taste the dish. Adjust seasoning if necessary by adding a little more soy sauce for saltiness or corn syrup for sweetness. Turn off the heat when the flavor is balanced.
Step 9
Serve the braised flatfish in a nice dish. It’s ready to be enjoyed as a delicious main course!
Step 10
This braised flatfish, with its perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors, is a true ‘rice thief’ – it’ll make you want to eat more rice! Enjoy your healthy and delicious meal!
