Delicious Abalone Porridge for Babies
16-Month-Old Baby’s Abalone Porridge Recipe: Super Simple One-Bowl Meal
I wanted to make various dishes with abalone for my baby, so I tried making abalone porridge. My baby usually dislikes the texture of porridge, but he ate this one really well. It’s nutritious and flavorful.
Ingredients- 2 abalones
- 1/2 cup short-grain rice
- 1/2 cup sweet rice (glutinous rice)
- 1 small piece of zucchini
- A little bit of onion
- 1 small piece of carrot
- 1/4 tsp baby salt
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 500ml broth (anchovy-kelp broth or vegetable broth recommended)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Rinse the sweet rice (glutinous rice) and short-grain rice thoroughly, then soak them in water for 30 minutes. Mixing half sweet rice and half short-grain rice creates the best texture for porridge, making it wonderfully chewy and smooth.
Step 2
Scrub the abalones vigorously with a brush under running water, using baking soda or coarse salt to remove any slime. Once cleaned, carefully remove the ‘teeth’ from the abalone using a knife or kitchen shears. Separate the abalone’s innards and set them aside; rinse the abalone meat thoroughly.
Step 3
Chop the prepared abalone meat, zucchini, carrot, and onion into manageable pieces. Place these chopped ingredients into a food processor (chopper) and process until finely pureed. Aim for a very smooth consistency so your baby can easily eat it.
Step 4
Heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil in a pot over medium heat. Add the separated abalone innards and the soaked rice. Stir and sauté until the rice grains become slightly translucent and fragrant. Frying the rice well before adding liquid enhances the nutty flavor of the porridge.
Step 5
Once the rice is well sautéed, add the pureed abalone, zucchini, carrot, and onion mixture to the pot. Continue to stir and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the vegetables soften and the abalone releases its aroma.
Step 6
Pour in the 500ml of broth. If using anchovy-kelp broth, it will naturally add umami, so you won’t need much extra seasoning. Add 1/4 teaspoon of baby salt and stir well. It’s best to keep the seasoning mild for babies, using baby-specific salt. Start with a small amount of salt and adjust to taste later.
Step 7
Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring continuously to prevent sticking. Cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice grains are fully cooked and the porridge has thickened to your desired consistency. Taste and add a tiny pinch more salt if needed, or stir in half a tablespoon of sesame oil after turning off the heat for extra aroma. Let it cool slightly before serving to your baby.
