Ingredients- 10 Vienna sausages
- 5 Tbsp pancake mix (approx. 50g)
- 3 Tbsp milk (approx. 30ml)
- 1L vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1 slice cheese
- 20 black sesame seeds (for garnish)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, we’ll create the octopus tentacle shapes on the Vienna sausages. Using a knife, make shallow cuts (about 4-5 cuts) into about 2/3rds of the sausage from the bottom, as shown in the picture. When fried, these cuts will curl up nicely, forming adorable octopus legs.
Step 2
Now, let’s make the pancake batter. Pancake mix usually has added sweetness, so you don’t need to add extra sugar or salt. In a bowl, combine 5 tablespoons of pancake mix with 3 tablespoons of milk. Mix until it reaches a consistency similar to thick yogurt. Avoid making the batter too thin. Whisk until smooth and lump-free.
Step 3
To make battering and frying easier and safer, it’s helpful to insert toothpicks into the sausages. This prevents your fingers from getting messy with batter and protects them from the hot oil.
Step 4
Dip the Vienna sausages (with toothpicks inserted) into the pancake batter. Coat only about 1/3rd of the sausage with batter. Applying a thin layer is key, as a thick coating can burn quickly during frying. Be careful not to overcoat the sausage.
Step 5
Heat the vegetable oil to about 170-180℃ (340-350℉). Carefully place the battered sausages into the hot oil and fry for just 1 minute. Pancake batter cooks much faster than regular flour batter, so a short frying time is essential to prevent burning and achieve a nice golden color. Fry while gently turning them to ensure even cooking. Please be cautious as hot oil can splatter.
Step 6
Now for the cute faces! Cut small circles out of the cheese slice using a small circle punch or a knife. These will be the eyes. Attach these cheese circles to the fried octopus hot dogs. Then, carefully place a black sesame seed in the center of each cheese circle to create the pupils.
Step 7
Finally, let’s give our octopus hot dogs some personality! Place the cheese eyes in different positions to create various fun expressions. Imagine smiling faces, surprised faces, or mischievous ones! Making these unique octopus hot dogs together will be a delightful activity. These adorable creations are perfect for a special Kids’ Day treat!
