  • Servings : More than 6 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 30 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Ingredients

  • Vienna sausages (as many as you like)
  • Hot cake mix (1 paper cup)
  • Water or milk (1/3 paper cup)
  • 1 egg (optional)

Seasoning/Toppings

  • Cheddar cheese
  • Katsu sauce (Tonkatsu sauce)
  • Decorative toppings (as desired)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, please prepare all the basic ingredients for the hot dogs.

Step 1

Step 2

Make cross-shaped cuts (+) on the Vienna sausages, leaving about 1cm at the top uncut. Make the cuts deep enough so that they will open up when cooked.

Step 2

Step 3

In a bowl, combine the hot cake mix with water or milk and the egg (if using). Mix well until there are no lumps to create a batter.

Step 3

Step 4

The batter should be slightly thick, not too watery, so that it coats the sausages well.

Step 4

Step 5

Insert a skewer into each Vienna sausage that has been cut. Make sure to firmly insert the skewer into the top part of the sausage so the shape holds well.

Step 5

Step 6

First, dip only the uncut top portion (about 1/4) of the sausage into the batter. This will help the cut parts spread out like tentacles when fried.

Step 6

Step 7

Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Carefully place the battered part of the sausage into the hot oil and fry for about 2 minutes. You should see the cuts starting to open up.

Step 7

Step 8

Remove the partially fried sausage and dip the entire sausage into the batter once more. This second coating will create a crispy crust.

Step 8

Step 9

Now, carefully place the fully battered hot dog into the hot oil. Fry over medium heat for about 3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Check that the ‘tentacles’ have opened up nicely.

Step 9

Step 10

Once golden brown and crispy, remove the octopus hot dogs from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. This ensures a perfectly crispy texture.

Step 10

Step 11

Now, let’s make the eyes for our octopus! I used round slices of cheddar cheese to represent the eyes. Feel free to get creative with your decorations!

Step 11

Step 12

Finally, use the katsu sauce to draw pupils onto the cheese eyes, and your delicious octopus hot dogs are complete! The kids will absolutely love them!
