Children’s Day Special Snack! ‘Toast Pie’ You Can Make Together

Crispy Toast Pie Made with Kids

Nowadays, we’re spending more time at home, and what could be more delicious than snacks made by the children themselves? Apart from handling the stove, let the children try their hand at the rest of the steps. It’s a fun cooking session that will greatly help develop their fine motor skills and sense of accomplishment.

Recipe Info

  • Category : Dessert
  • Ingredient Category : Processed foods
  • Occasion : Snack
  • Cooking : Grilled / Roasted
  • Servings : 1 serving
  • Cooking Time : Within 30 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Main Ingredients

  • 2 slices of bread
  • 1 rolling pin
  • 1 plastic bread knife (or safe knife)

Filling

  • 2 Tbsp strawberry jam

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, neatly arrange all the ingredients for making the toast pie on the table. Take this time to look at the ingredients together with the children to spark their interest in cooking.

Step 1

Step 2

Prepare a plastic bread knife (or child-safe knife). It’s important to use tools that are safe for children to handle.

Step 2

Step 3

We’ll be cutting off the edges, or crusts, of the bread slices. Encourage the children to do this part themselves! It’s good to supervise them as they hold the tool and slowly follow along. This will make the finished pie look tidier.

Step 3

Step 4

Now it’s time to use the rolling pin to flatten the bread slices. Again, let the children hold the rolling pin themselves and experience the fun of making the bread thinner by controlling their strength. It’s okay if they’re a bit clumsy at first!

Step 4

Step 5

Using the rolling pin, flatten the remaining slice of bread just like the first one. Make both bread slices thin and wide, perfect for shaping into pies.

Step 5

Step 6

Without adding any oil to the frying pan, place the prepared bread slices and toast them until they are golden brown and crispy on both sides. Since this step involves using heat, it must be done by a guardian (adult). Make sure the children stay away from the hot frying pan.

Step 6

Step 7

Stack the two well-toasted bread slices on top of each other, then fold them in half and cut. It’s good to safely supervise and encourage the children as they handle the knife for this step as well. Help them experience the joy of completing their own snack.

Step 7

Step 8

From the folded and cut bread slices, take the top piece and carefully hollow out the center. Gently press down to hollow it out without breaking the bread.

Step 8

Step 9

When you flip the top slice of bread, you’ll see a circular opening. To create this space for the jam, use the knife to cut out a square shape from the center of the bread. This will create a space to fill with jam.

Step 9

Step 10

On the bottom slice of bread (the one that will be underneath), spread a thin layer of strawberry jam evenly over the entire surface.

Step 10

Step 11

Now, carefully place the top slice of bread, with its center cut out, onto the jam-covered bottom slice. Align the square opening nicely.

Step 11

Step 12

Finally, fill the square opening of the top bread slice with a little more strawberry jam. Your toast pie will be filled with delicious sweetness!

Step 12

Step 13

Crispy on the outside, sweet strawberry jam filling on the inside – your toast pie is complete! Enjoy a delightful time sharing this special snack you made with your children.
