Air Fryer Tofu Perfection: Crispy Outside, Tender Inside! (Tofu Steak & Savory Soy Sauce Recipe)
This air fryer tofu recipe has been on my must-try list for a while! Today, I finally had some tofu at home and decided to give this grilled tofu dish a go. Adding my own special soy sauce makes it even more delicious. Get ready for a tofu dish that’s crispy on the outside and wonderfully tender on the inside.
Tofu Steak Ingredients- 1 block firm tofu
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
Savory Soy Sauce- A little green onion, finely chopped
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1/2 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 0.5 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare one block of firm tofu. Gently rinse it under running water. Place two wooden chopsticks on either side of the tofu block, ensuring they don’t go all the way through. Make cuts, like dicing, only on the top layer without cutting through to the bottom. This technique helps the tofu maintain its shape and prevents it from breaking apart during cooking.
Step 2
After scoring the tofu, lightly pat it dry with paper towels. By pressing gently, you’ll notice the paper towels absorb a significant amount of moisture. Removing excess water is key to achieving a crispy texture.
Step 3
Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper and place the dried tofu on top. Now, drizzle 2 tablespoons of olive oil evenly over the entire surface of the tofu. Make sure to get the oil into the cuts you made, as this will enhance the flavor and crispiness.
Step 4
Preheat your air fryer to 180°C (350°F) and then cook the tofu for 20 minutes. During this time, the tofu will turn golden brown and the exterior will start to firm up.
Step 5
While the tofu is cooking, prepare the green onions for the soy sauce. It’s best to use a generous amount of finely chopped green onions for a fragrant flavor. If green onions are unavailable, finely chopped scallions can be a good substitute.
Step 6
In a small bowl, combine all the ingredients for the soy sauce. Add 1/2 tablespoon of sugar, 3 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 teaspoon of minced garlic, and the chopped green onions.
Step 7
Next, add 1 tablespoon of sesame oil and 0.5 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds. Stir everything together well to create a smooth, flavorful sauce.
Step 8
After 20 minutes, check the doneness of the tofu. If you prefer it even crispier or if it needs more time, increase the air fryer temperature to 190°C (375°F) and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
Step 9
Once the tofu is perfectly cooked, transfer it to a serving dish. Drizzle the prepared savory soy sauce evenly over the golden-brown tofu pieces. The sauce will elevate the tofu’s flavor significantly.
