Make Street Food Swirl Potatoes at Home

Hello everyone! This is Danbi from Danbi’s Table. Today, we’re making swirl potatoes, a classic street food! While special tools are available now, I’ll show you how to make these beautiful spiral potatoes using just a knife. As an everyday home cook, I found it easy to master the technique, so you can definitely succeed too! Just a heads-up, it requires a little patience and dexterity.

  • Occasion : Snack
  • Cooking : Deep-fry
  • Servings : 1 serving
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Ingredients
  • 2-3 medium potatoes
  • Wooden skewers, as needed
  • Cooking oil (for deep frying)
  • Generous amount of cheese seasoning powder
  • Parmesan cheese powder (optional)
  • Parsley flakes (optional)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Wash the potatoes thoroughly and firmly skewer them with the wooden skewers. You can peel the potatoes if you prefer, or simply wash them well if leaving the skin on. Be careful not to cut yourself while inserting the skewers!

Step 2

Now, let’s create the swirl! Insert a knife deep into the side of the potato to stabilize it. Then, holding the knife still, rotate the potato with your other hand, slicing a long, continuous spiral of an even thickness. The trick is to keep the knife steady and turn the potato.

Step 3

Carefully unfurl the cut potato to form a spiral shape. Pull gently to avoid breaking the potato. Once shaped, soak the spiral potato in cold water for a short while to remove excess starch; this will make them crispier. Ensure you drain the water thoroughly afterward.

Step 4

This step is optional, but a light coating of flour can enhance crispiness. Lightly sprinkle some frying flour all over the potato.

Step 5

Heat cooking oil in a pot to about 170-180°C (340-350°F). To test the temperature, drop a small piece of potato; it should sizzle and float up immediately. Carefully add the swirl potato to the hot oil and fry until golden brown. I fried mine twice for extra crispiness (fry once, let it cool slightly, then fry again).

Step 6

Once the potatoes are nicely fried, place them on paper towels briefly to absorb excess oil. While they are still hot, generously sprinkle with cheese seasoning powder! For added flavor, you can also add Parmesan cheese powder and parsley flakes. The cheese seasoning alone is incredibly delicious, so don’t skip it!

Step 7

Ta-da! Your homemade swirl potatoes are ready! They taste best when enjoyed fresh and hot. Enjoy your delicious treat! 😊
