Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Let’s start by introducing the ingredients you’ll need to make delicious, crispy Spam Katsu. This recipe is designed to serve approximately 2 people.
Step 2
First, we need to prepare the three essential coatings for our Spam Katsu. In three separate shallow bowls, place a generous amount of all-purpose flour, two beaten eggs, and panko breadcrumbs. Having them ready in this order will make the coating process smooth.
Step 3
The star of our Spam Katsu is, of course, the Spam itself! I’ve used Spam, but feel free to substitute it with any other canned ham you prefer. Choose your favorite!
Step 4
Prepare three 120g cans of Spam. Carefully remove the Spam from the cans.
Step 5
Now it’s time to coat the Spam with our three layers of deliciousness. First, dredge each piece of Spam lightly and evenly in the all-purpose flour. This step helps the subsequent coatings adhere better.
Step 6
Ensure the Spam is coated with a thin, uniform layer of flour. Avoid applying too thick a layer, as this can make the katsu heavy.
Step 7
After the initial flour coating, set the Spam pieces aside briefly.
Step 8
Next, dip the floured Spam into the beaten egg mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated. The vibrant yellow egg wash will create a moist base for the final coating.
Step 9
Finally, for that signature crunch, coat the egg-dipped Spam generously with panko breadcrumbs. Press the breadcrumbs gently onto the Spam to ensure they stick well. This will result in an extra crispy katsu!
Step 10
With the panko coating complete, our Spam is starting to look like proper Spam Katsu! It already has an appetizing appearance.
Step 11
Now, let’s fry our Spam Katsu to golden perfection. Place a deep frying pan on your stovetop or induction burner and pour in a generous amount of canola oil or vegetable oil. Set the heat to medium.
Step 12
Once the oil is heated to the right temperature (you can test this by dipping a wooden chopstick; if bubbles form around it, it’s ready), carefully place the coated Spam into the hot oil.
Step 13
Fry the Spam for about 3-4 minutes per side, until it’s golden brown and wonderfully crispy. Turn the pieces occasionally to ensure even cooking and prevent burning. Repeat this process with the remaining Spam slices.
Step 14
Voila! Our golden and crispy Spam Katsu is ready. It looks fantastic, and I’m so pleased with how well they turned out!
Step 15
Once the Spam Katsu has cooled slightly, slice each piece lengthwise into three portions. This makes them easier to handle and perfect for dipping.
Step 16
Now, let’s prepare some refreshing sides to accompany our Spam Katsu. Take a generous amount of cabbage and rinse it thoroughly under cold running water.
Step 17
Drain the cabbage well and then slice it thinly into fine shreds. The crisp, fresh texture of the cabbage makes a wonderful contrast to the rich katsu.
Step 18
Let’s whip up a special sauce to elevate our Spam Katsu experience. Gather 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise and 2 teaspoons of minced garlic.
Step 19
Combine the mayonnaise and minced garlic in a small bowl and mix them together thoroughly. This creates a creamy yet zesty Mayo Garlic sauce that’s incredibly addictive! (Using a whisk can help achieve a smoother consistency.)
Step 20
Time for the grand presentation! Arrange the crispy Spam Katsu, shredded cabbage, a bowl of white rice, and sweet corn artfully on a large platter. Drizzle some Thousand Island dressing over the cabbage for added flavor. If you have parsley flakes, sprinkle them over the Spam Katsu for an even more appealing visual. You’ve now created a truly impressive Spam Katsu meal!
Step 21
To complete our Spam Katsu feast, let’s add dipping sauces. We have our homemade Mayo Garlic sauce, a classic Tonkatsu sauce, and some Ketchup, especially for the little ones. A complete and satisfying spread!
Step 22
In times when dining out might feel uncertain, transforming your home into a Spam Katsu haven is a wonderful idea. Enjoy a delightful meal without leaving your house! The variety of dipping sauces also adds an element of fun, allowing everyone to choose their favorite. Gather your family and enjoy a memorable meal together.
