Dumpling Preparation
- 5 frozen dumplings
Snow Flower Coating (Starch Slurry)
- 8 Tbsp cold water
- 1 Tbsp cornstarch
- 8 Tbsp cold water
- 1 Tbsp cornstarch
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare your pan for frying the dumplings. Heat the pan over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of cooking oil, coating the bottom generously.
Step 2
Once the oil is slightly warm, carefully arrange the 5 frozen dumplings in a single layer in the pan. It’s best to leave a little space between each dumpling.
Step 3
Now, let’s create the crispy ‘snow flower’ coating. In a small bowl, combine 8 tablespoons of cold water with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch. Whisk them together until smooth, creating a ‘starch slurry’. Drizzle this slurry evenly over the empty spaces in the pan and along the edges of the dumplings. After adding the slurry, it is crucial to reduce the heat to a ‘very low simmer’! If the heat is too high, the coating will burn before the dumplings are cooked. Cover the pan with a lid and let it simmer gently for about 15 minutes, or until the dumpling wrappers become slightly translucent and the coating is crispy.
Step 4
After about 15 minutes, when the coating is crispy and most of the moisture has evaporated, you should be able to gently shake the pan and see the dumplings release easily from the bottom, detaching with a slight ‘thud’. This indicates they are perfectly cooked. Carefully invert them onto a serving plate so the beautiful snow flower coating is facing up. Your visually appealing and delicious Snow Flower Dumplings are ready to be enjoyed! Experience the delightful contrast of a crispy exterior and a moist, tender interior.
