Basic Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread (slightly thicker slices work best)
  • 100ml fresh milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 pinch of fine salt
  • 2 tsp granulated sugar (adjust sweetness to your preference)
  • 1 tsp butter

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare a large, deep bowl. Add 100ml of fresh milk, 1 egg, a pinch of fine salt, and 2 tsp of granulated sugar. Whisk gently with a whisk until well combined and no lumps remain. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Step 2

Dip each slice of bread into the bowl one by one. Ensure you soak both the front and back surfaces thoroughly. It’s crucial to let the bread soak deeply, allowing the egg-milk mixture to penetrate the inside, not just coating the surface. Handle the bread gently to prevent it from breaking apart.

Step 3

Stack the milk-soaked bread slices neatly on top of each other. This makes them easier to handle when placing them in the pan and helps them maintain their shape while cooking.

Step 4

Place a frying pan over low heat and let it preheat gradually. French toast can burn on the outside while remaining uncooked inside if the heat is too high, so maintaining low heat from start to finish is key.

Step 5

Once the pan is gently heated, add 1 tsp of butter. As the butter melts and releases its nutty aroma, spread it evenly across the entire surface of the pan. Coating the pan thinly with butter will prevent the bread from sticking and help it achieve a beautiful golden-brown color.

Step 6

Now, carefully place the milk-soaked bread slices onto the buttered pan. Keep the heat on the lowest setting. Be patient and let the bread cook slowly from the inside out without burning. This patient cooking process is the secret to achieving a crispy exterior and a moist interior.

Step 7

Once one side is a beautiful golden brown, carefully flip the bread using a spatula. Cook the other side until it reaches the same golden hue. When both sides are evenly and gorgeously browned, your delicious French toast is ready!
