Crispy Homemade Potato Chips
Transforming Sprouted Potatoes into Delicious Potato Chips
Got a few sprouted potatoes lying around? Wondering what to do with them? With a quick peel and slice, you can easily transform them into delightful homemade potato chips! They make a perfect snack on their own or a fantastic accompaniment to your favorite beer. I wish I’d made these before they started sprouting, but at least I can enjoy them now!
Ingredients- 4 potatoes
- 1 pinch of salt (or to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, carefully remove any sprouts from the potatoes and then peel them. Using a vegetable peeler will help you get a thin and even peel. Once peeled, slice the potatoes as thinly as possible. The thinner the slices, the crispier your chips will be. Rinse the sliced potatoes under running water, gently rubbing them with your hands to remove excess starch. This step is crucial to prevent the chips from sticking together and to ensure a crispy texture.
Step 2
After rinsing, drain the potato slices thoroughly in a colander. For best results, pat them dry with paper towels to remove as much moisture as possible. Excess water can cause the chips to steam rather than crisp up, and can also lead to oil splattering if you were frying.
Step 3
Arrange the dried potato slices in a single layer in your air fryer basket, making sure they don’t overlap too much. Overcrowding the basket will prevent even cooking. If you have a lot of potatoes, it’s better to cook them in batches. I admittedly tried to fit too many in at once and it wasn’t ideal! Once arranged, place the basket in the air fryer and cook at 200°C (390°F) for 10 minutes.
Step 4
After the initial 10 minutes, carefully take out the air fryer basket and gently toss or flip the potato slices. This ensures they cook evenly on all sides. Return the basket to the air fryer and continue cooking at 185°C (365°F) for another 9 minutes. During this second cooking stage, sprinkle a pinch of salt over the chips to add a savory flavor.
Step 5
Your delicious homemade potato chips are ready! While air fryer chips might not achieve the exact deep-fried crispness of store-bought ones, they offer a wonderfully satisfying crunch and delicious savory flavor right from your own kitchen. Enjoy these warm, freshly made chips!
