Ingredients
- Dried kelp 2 handfuls (approx. 10-15g)
- Cooking oil 4 Tbsp
- Sugar 2 Tbsp
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, cut the dried kelp into bite-sized pieces. Cutting them into roughly 3-4 cm squares makes them easy to eat after frying and visually appealing.
Step 2
The white powdery substance on dried kelp can be salt or nutrients. If you’re concerned about impurities before frying, lightly dampen a clean cloth or paper towel and gently wipe the surface of the kelp. Avoid rubbing too hard, as this might wash away beneficial nutrients.
Step 3
Heat 4 tablespoons of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Once the oil is sufficiently hot (around 160-170°C or 320-340°F), add the prepared kelp and fry quickly over low heat. Kelp can become tough if fried for too long, so a short frying time is crucial.
Step 4
Remove the kelp as soon as it turns a light yellowish color. Keep a close eye on it to prevent burning, as over-frying can make it bitter. Drain the fried kelp on a sieve to remove excess oil. This step ensures maximum crispiness.
Step 5
While the drained kelp is still hot, sprinkle 2 tablespoons of sugar evenly over it. The residual heat from the kelp will melt the sugar, coating it to add sweetness and enhance the crispiness. Use a spatula or chopsticks to toss the kelp, ensuring the sugar is evenly distributed and doesn’t clump. Your delicious and healthy dried kelp chips are ready!
