- 1 Tbsp cornstarch
- 3 Tbsp water (for cornstarch slurry)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the vegetables and fruits for the sweet and sour sauce. Onion, bell peppers, and broccoli are excellent choices. You can also add other vegetables like green peppers, cucumbers, or carrots according to your preference. For a touch of tropical flavor, canned pineapple is great, or use a fresh orange for a bright citrus note. If using an orange, peel it and cut it into bite-sized pieces.
Step 2
Seed the prepared onion and bell peppers, then cut them into roughly 1.5 cm (about 0.6 inch) pieces, suitable for a single bite. Cutting them too small can make them mushy when cooked, so maintaining a good size is key.
Step 3
Cut the broccoli into florets, blanch them briefly in boiling water, then shock them in cold water to retain their vibrant color. Peel the orange, separate the segments, and cut them into larger pieces. (If using canned pineapple, reserve some of the syrup and cut the fruit into pieces.)
Step 4
Cook the frozen dumplings in an air fryer at 170°C (340°F) for about 12 minutes until golden and crispy. While larger dumplings work, bite-sized frozen dumplings are perfect for this dish, offering a delightful crunch that complements the sauce beautifully, especially for children. Adjust the cooking time based on your air fryer and the size of the dumplings.
Step 5
Prepare the cornstarch slurry for thickening the sauce. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and 3 tablespoons of cold water until completely smooth. Ensuring there are no lumps is crucial for a silky sauce.
Step 6
Now, let’s make the sweet and sour sauce. Pour 250ml of water into a medium-sized saucepan.
Step 7
Once the water begins to boil, add 4 tablespoons of soy sauce, 4 tablespoons of sugar, and 4 tablespoons of vinegar. Stir well until the sugar is completely dissolved. This ratio creates a balanced sweet and tangy flavor, but feel free to adjust it to your liking.
Step 8
When the sauce comes to a rolling boil, reduce the heat to low. Add all the prepared vegetables and fruits (onion, bell peppers, broccoli, orange/pineapple) to the sauce. Cook for just 1-2 minutes to slightly soften the vegetables while keeping them pleasantly crisp.
Step 9
Finally, gradually pour in the cornstarch slurry while stirring constantly to thicken the sauce to your desired consistency. It’s best to add it bit by bit rather than all at once. Once the sauce reaches a nice glossy, thick consistency, remove it from the heat and stir quickly to incorporate.
Step 10
Arrange the crispy air-fried dumplings on a serving plate, then generously ladle the warm, delicious sweet and sour sauce over them. Your delightful Crispy Dumpling Sweet and Sour is ready!
Step 11
The contrast between the crispy dumplings and the bright, tangy sauce is truly wonderful, cutting through any richness and enhancing the overall flavor. This dish is an easy and satisfying option for a healthy kids’ snack or a special treat. You can achieve a fantastic result without deep-frying, so we highly recommend giving this recipe a try!
