Ingredients

  • 2 slices of bread (thicker bread works best for a richer texture)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 pinch of salt (to enhance flavor and reduce eggy smell)
  • 3 Tbsp milk
  • 5 slices of ham (use your favorite kind)
  • 2 slices of cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your preferred cheese)
  • 2 Tbsp strawberry jam (or other fruit jam)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

We’re going to make a Monte Cristo sandwich that’s hearty enough for a meal and absolutely delightful as a brunch option. It’s also a fantastic snack for kids!

Step 1

Step 2

First, crack 1 egg into a bowl and add a pinch of salt. Whisk it well to create an egg mixture. Then, add 3 tablespoons of milk and whisk gently until combined. This mixture will help make the bread wonderfully moist and flavorful. Prepare to dip the bread in this mixture shortly. Now, spread the strawberry jam thinly on one side of each slice of bread. Be careful not to over-spread, as too much jam might ooze out during cooking.

Step 2

Step 3

It’s time to assemble the sandwich filling. Prepare the ham slices to fit the bread. If you have large slices, cut them to match the bread size. If using smaller slices, overlap them. Place 2 slices of cheese on top of the ham. If your cheese slices are smaller than the bread, you can overlap them as well. (Note: Traditionally, a Monte Cristo sandwich uses three slices of bread with ham and cheese layered in between. However, today we’ll be making a simpler version with just two slices, which is equally delicious!)

Step 3

Step 4

Now, dip the bread slices filled with ham and cheese into the egg and milk mixture, ensuring both sides are well coated. Let them soak for about 10 seconds each to absorb the liquid properly. Next, lightly grease a frying pan and place the sandwich on it over low heat. It’s important to manage the heat to prevent burning. Cook slowly, flipping occasionally, until both sides are beautifully golden brown and toasted. This should take about 3-4 minutes per side.

Step 4

Step 5

And there you have it – a delicious Monte Cristo sandwich! Enjoy the delightful combination of crispy bread, tender filling, savory ham, melty cheese, and sweet strawberry jam. It’s perfect served warm with a cup of coffee or a glass of milk.
