Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Here are the ingredients for our Garaetteok Pepero. Each garaetteok stick should be about 10cm (4 inches) long. You can use plain, brown rice, or even colorful three-color garaetteok for variety.
Step 2
Cut each garaetteok stick into four equal pieces, about 2.5-3cm (1 inch) long. This will make them a perfect bite-size for Pepero.
Step 3
I used the three-color brown rice garaetteok for added flavor and visual appeal. Feel free to experiment with different types of garaetteok to create your unique Pepero!
Step 4
In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of sesame oil, and 1 tablespoon of honey. Whisk them together well to create a delicious soy sauce mixture. This sauce will add a sweet and savory dimension to your baked garaetteok.
Step 5
Lightly grease your waffle maker with a small amount of butter over low heat. You only need to butter the pan for the first batch to prevent sticking and add a lovely flavor.
Step 6
Place the cut garaetteok pieces onto the buttered waffle maker, ensuring they are not too crowded.
Step 7
Close the waffle maker and bake for about 40 seconds on each side. Flip it regularly to ensure the garaetteok is evenly browned and crispy. The waffle maker’s heat will help achieve that perfect texture.
Step 8
The garaetteok is now beautifully golden brown! You can bake it a bit longer for extra crispiness, but this stage offers the ideal ‘crispy outside, chewy inside’ texture that we’re aiming for. Be careful not to burn them.
Step 9
Look how pretty the three-color garaetteok turned out after baking! The vibrant colors make these Pepero sticks visually appealing and even more special.
Step 10
You can enjoy your Garaetteok Pepero in two delightful ways. Dip them in a bit of honey and then coat with the roasted soybean powder for a nutty, sweet treat. Alternatively, dip them in the prepared soy sauce mixture for a perfectly balanced sweet and salty flavor. Enjoy them however you like!
