Main Ingredients- 6 strips of bacon
- 12 tteokbokki rice cakes (or wheat flour rice cakes)
- A little canola oil
- Ketchup (optional, for serving)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Lightly rinse the rice cakes under running water. If the rice cakes are firm, soak them in warm water for about 5-10 minutes until they become soft and pliable. Soft rice cakes can be used immediately.
Step 2
Thoroughly pat the rice cakes dry with a paper towel to remove all moisture. Leaving moisture can prevent the bacon from sticking well and may cause oil splattering during cooking.
Step 3
Since bacon strips are long, cut each strip in half to make wrapping the rice cakes easier. This allows for one piece of bacon per rice cake, making portion control also convenient.
Step 4
Lay out one half-strip of bacon flat.
Step 5
Place one softened rice cake (with excess water removed) onto the center of the bacon strip.
Step 6
Roll the bacon tightly around the rice cake, ensuring the end of the bacon completely covers the rice cake. It’s important to roll it firmly so the rice cake doesn’t come out.
Step 7
To secure the rolled bacon-wrapped rice cake and prevent it from unraveling, pierce it through the center with a skewer. If you don’t have skewers, wooden chopsticks can also be used.
Step 8
Lightly grease a preheated pan with canola oil and set the heat to medium-low. Cooking on high heat can burn the bacon before the rice cake is cooked through, so be mindful of the heat level.
Step 9
Once the oil is slightly warm, carefully place the prepared bacon-wrapped rice cakes onto the pan in an even layer.
Step 10
Cook until the bacon is golden brown and crispy on all sides, turning them occasionally to ensure even cooking. The fat rendered from the bacon will help cook the rice cake.
Step 11
Arrange the well-cooked bacon-wrapped rice cakes attractively on a serving plate. Serving with ketchup for dipping can enhance the flavor even further, according to your preference.
