Crispy and Sweet Tteokkochi (Korean Skewered Rice Cakes)
The Best Kid’s Snack! Easy Tteokkochi Recipe with a Versatile Sauce
Let me show you how to quickly make tteokkochi, a favorite snack for kids, using a versatile all-purpose sauce. It’s super easy and delicious! I’ve also shared a recipe for the all-purpose sauce separately, so please check that out for even more flavor. This recipe will give you crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside tteokkochi that you won’t regret making!
Essential Ingredients- 15 Tteokkochi-shaped rice cakes
- A little cooking oil
- 0.5 Tbsp All-purpose sauce (refer to separate recipe)
- 0.5 Tbsp Ketchup
- 0.5 Tbsp Corn syrup (or other liquid sweetener)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
For the tteokkochi rice cakes, you can choose your preferred type, but I highly recommend using plump tteokbokki rice cakes that contain cheese. They are easier to skewer, and the texture and flavor are even better. I personally prefer using cheese-filled tteokbokki rice cakes.
Step 2
To prevent the rice cakes from sticking together, give them a quick rinse under running water. Then, place the rice cakes in boiling water and blanch them for about 3-4 minutes. This will soften them, making them chewy and ready to absorb the sauce beautifully.
Step 3
Once the rice cakes are softened, drain them well. Then, carefully thread about 5 rice cakes onto each skewer. Be cautious as the rice cakes will be hot.
Step 4
Lightly oil a heated pan. Place the skewered rice cakes in the pan and pan-fry them until golden brown on both sides. Cooking them until slightly crispy on the outside will enhance the overall texture of your tteokkochi.
Step 5
While the rice cakes are frying, prepare the sauce. In a small bowl or on the side of the pan, mix 0.5 Tbsp of the all-purpose sauce, 0.5 Tbsp of ketchup, and 0.5 Tbsp of corn syrup. The all-purpose sauce already provides a great base flavor, making this simple mix exceptionally tasty.
Step 6
Move the fried rice cakes to a pan over low heat. Pour the prepared sauce over the rice cakes. Let the sauce simmer and bubble gently over low heat until it thickens slightly and coats the rice cakes. Stir occasionally to ensure the sauce is evenly distributed.
Step 7
Once the sauce has thickened and coated the rice cakes with a glossy sheen, continue to cook for another moment, flipping them to ensure both sides are well-coated. This final step will result in perfectly chewy tteokkochi with a delightful crispy exterior and a rich, flavorful sauce. They are ideal for a kids’ snack or a satisfying anytime treat! : )
