Main Ingredients

  • Bean sprouts (for steaming) 1 bag (approx. 300g)
  • Perilla seed powder (hulled) 3 Tbsp
  • Green onion (leaves only) a little

Seasoning

  • Salt 1/2 Tbsp
  • Minced garlic 1/2 Tbsp
  • Perilla oil 1 Tbsp
  • Toasted sesame seeds 1 Tbsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Using bean sprouts meant for steaming can result in a thicker and crunchier texture, but regular bean sprouts will also work well. Rinse the bean sprouts thoroughly under running water, removing any skins or debris, and prepare them.

Step 1

Step 2

Place the rinsed bean sprouts in a pot. Add only about 1/3 amount of water, just enough to barely cover the bottom of the pot. Close the lid and steam over medium heat until the bean sprouts are cooked.

Step 2

Step 3

Thinly slice the green leafy parts of the green onion. These will add a fragrant aroma and a touch of color to the dish.

Step 3

Step 4

After steaming the bean sprouts, open the lid and let them steam for about 1 minute. This step helps to eliminate any fishy odor from the bean sprouts and makes them even crunchier. Immediately rinse the steamed bean sprouts under cold water to cool them down completely. This will preserve their crisp texture, making them even more delicious.

Step 4

Step 5

It’s best to use white perilla seed powder that has had its hulls removed. This type of perilla powder offers a smoother and nuttier flavor, which is perfect for seasoned dishes like this.

Step 5

Step 6

In a large bowl, place the prepared bean sprouts. Add 3 Tbsp of hulled perilla seed powder, 1/2 Tbsp of salt, and the thinly sliced green onions.

Step 6

Step 7

Add 1/2 Tbsp of minced garlic to the mix. The slight pungency of the garlic will complement the nutty flavor of the perilla seeds beautifully.

Step 7

Step 8

Finally, add 1 Tbsp of toasted sesame seeds and 1 Tbsp of perilla oil. The rich aroma of the perilla oil will further enhance the overall flavor of the seasoned dish.

Step 8

Step 9

Gently mix all the seasoning ingredients with the bean sprouts in the bowl. Be careful not to mash the bean sprouts; mix them softly. You can adjust the amount of perilla seed powder to your liking – feel free to add more if you prefer a nuttier taste.

Step 9

Step 10

Isn’t it simple? Your crispy and richly nutty bean sprout side dish is ready! Enjoy it with a warm bowl of rice.
