Main Ingredients

  • 700g fresh bean sprouts
  • 1 Tbsp avocado oil
  • 100ml kelp stock

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp chopped green onion
  • 1 Tbsp soup soy sauce (guk-ganjang)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • Pinch of salt (to taste)
  • A little black pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare 700g of bean sprouts. This is approximately the amount you’ll get from a 1,000 KRW purchase at the market, though quantities may vary slightly by region. Rinse the bean sprouts thoroughly under running water to remove any debris and drain them well. It’s important to cook them without any ‘fishy’ smell for the best taste!

Step 1

Step 2

Heat a pot over medium heat and add 1 Tbsp of avocado oil. Add 1 Tbsp of minced garlic and 1 Tbsp of chopped green onion. Sauté until fragrant. Sautéing the garlic and green onions thoroughly will deepen the flavor of the seasoning.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the garlic and green onions are golden brown and releasing a delicious aroma, add all of the rinsed and prepared bean sprouts to the pot.

Step 3

Step 4

Drizzle 1 Tbsp of soup soy sauce evenly over the bean sprouts. Pour in 100ml of kelp stock. Cover the pot and cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes. Be careful not to overcook the bean sprouts, as they can become mushy. Cooking them just right is key to a crisp texture.

Step 4

Step 5

After 5 minutes, turn off the heat. While leaving some of the cooking liquid in the pot, add 1 tsp of salt and a little black pepper. Gently mix the bean sprouts to allow the seasonings to absorb. Taste and adjust the salt if needed.

Step 5

Step 6

Finally, generously drizzle 1 Tbsp of sesame oil over the mixture. If you like, you can also add perilla seed powder for an extra nutty flavor and aroma. Toss gently one more time to ensure all ingredients are well combined.

Step 6

Step 7

Voila! Your crispy and delicious Kongnamul Muchim is ready. Serve it as a side dish or pile it on top of a bowl of hot rice for a delicious bibimbap. It’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser that will make any meal more satisfying!
