- 1 cup tempura flour
- 1 egg
- 1 Tbsp cooking oil (for batter) + a little for air frying
- A little water (to seal the Gim)
- Leftover Japchae from the holidays
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
We’re going to transform leftover holiday Japchae into a fantastic snack! Today, I’ll show you how to easily make crispy Kim Mari fritters in the air fryer using your Japchae. They’re perfect for serving guests or as a delightful treat for kids.
Step 2
First, prepare the Gim. You can either cut the Gim into strips and roll the Japchae inside, or use whole sheets and cut the rolled Kim Mari later. Lay a sheet of Gim flat. Generously place the prepared Japchae onto the Gim. To ensure the Gim seals well and doesn’t unroll, lightly moisten the edge of the Gim with water or a bit of cooked rice. This will help it stick firmly.
Step 3
Carefully roll the Gim with the Japchae inside, ensuring it’s rolled tightly. A loose roll might come apart during cooking. Once rolled, cut the Kim Mari into roughly three equal pieces for a convenient size. Your Kim Mari rolls are now shaped!
Step 4
Next, let’s prepare the batter for coating the Kim Mari. In a bowl, combine 1 cup of tempura flour and 1 egg. Add 1 tablespoon of cooking oil to the batter. This oil helps create a crispier texture, mimicking a deep-fried feel, especially when using an air fryer. If you prefer not to add oil directly to the batter, you can lightly spray the rolled Kim Mari with cooking oil before placing them in the air fryer.
Step 5
Line your air fryer basket with parchment paper and lightly spray or brush the paper with cooking oil. Now, dip each rolled Kim Mari into the tempura batter, ensuring an even coating. Aim for a light, even layer of batter rather than a thick one; this is key to achieving maximum crispiness. Place the battered Kim Mari onto the prepared parchment paper. Air fry at 185°C (365°F) for about 13 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
Step 6
Voila! Your delicious, crispy Kim Mari fritters made from leftover Japchae are ready. Serve them with soy sauce or your favorite dipping sauce for an extra burst of flavor!
