Soup Ingredients

  • 1 bundle dried seaweed (approx. 10g)
  • 1.5L water (prepare generously)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 can (150g) tuna, drained (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons perilla seed powder
  • Sesame oil, to taste
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (frozen garlic also works)
  • 5 tablespoons soy sauce for soup (or regular soy sauce)
  • Salt, to taste

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the dried seaweed. Cut the dried seaweed into bite-sized pieces (about 3-4 cm) using scissors or by hand. Soak it in clean water for about 1 hour until fully rehydrated. Drain the rehydrated seaweed in a colander. If it seems too watery, you can gently squeeze out excess water.

Step 1

Step 2

Pour 1.5L of water into a pot. Using a generous amount of water will result in a clearer and more refreshing soup.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the water begins to boil, add the rehydrated seaweed, chopped onion, and minced garlic to the pot. Let it simmer together. Cook over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes, or until the onion becomes translucent and the seaweed is tender.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, add the tuna. You can drain the oil from the tuna can or leave it in, depending on your preference. Stir well to combine. Add 5 tablespoons of soup soy sauce to season the soup. Taste and adjust the seasoning with a little salt if needed.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the soup returns to a boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer for another 2-3 minutes. Drizzle about two rounds of sesame oil just before finishing to enhance the aroma and flavor. Avoid boiling the sesame oil for too long, as its fragrance can dissipate.

Step 5

Step 6

Just before turning off the heat, generously stir in 2 tablespoons of perilla seed powder. Stir lightly after adding the powder. Your delicious and nutty Tuna Perilla Seed Seaweed Soup is now ready! Enjoy it with a bowl of hot rice.
