Main Ingredients- Approximately 30 Tteokbokki rice cakes (both chewy rice cakes and softer wheat cakes work)
- 500ml Fresh Milk
- 8-10 Cooked Cocktail Shrimps, peeled and deveined
- 1 handful Bacon, chopped (about 50g)
- 1/3 medium Onion, thinly sliced
- 3-4 cloves Garlic, minced or thinly sliced
- 2 slices Cheddar Cheese (processed slices)
- 1 packet Ramen Broth Powder (spicy ramen powder recommended)
- 1/2 Tbsp Fine Gochugaru (Korean red chili powder)
- A pinch of Chili Flakes or Gochugaru for extra spice (optional)
- A sprinkle of mixed dried herbs like Parsley (for garnish)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
In a wide pan or pot, heat a moderate amount of cooking oil over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced onion and minced garlic (or sliced garlic) and sauté until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic; slow cooking is key for a deep flavor.
Step 2
Once the onions become translucent and the garlic smells aromatic, add the chopped bacon and cook until it’s nicely browned and slightly crispy. (If using frozen bacon, thaw it beforehand in cold water or briefly in the microwave.)
Step 3
For a touch of heat, stir in the chili flakes or gochugaru at this stage and sauté for a moment. If you prefer a milder flavor or are making this for children, you can skip this step.
Step 4
When the onions, garlic, and bacon are nicely sautéed, slowly pour in the 500ml of fresh milk. (To adjust the sauce consistency to your liking, you can start with about 400ml and add more later as needed to reach your desired thickness.)
Step 5
Now for the secret to our delicious Rosé Tteokbokki! To ensure a consistently rich and savory flavor, add one packet of ramen broth powder. Any type works, but I recommend a spicy ramen broth for a bit of a kick.
Step 6
Add the tteokbokki rice cakes and stir to separate them. (If using frozen rice cakes, rinse them under cold water to thaw and prevent them from sticking together. Both rice cakes and wheat cakes are suitable.)
Step 7
Add the cocktail shrimps to the pot. Cook until the shrimps turn pink and opaque, which usually takes just a few minutes. Avoid overcooking them.
Step 8
Add the 2 slices of cheddar cheese. This will melt into the sauce, making it even creamier and richer. (While other types of processed cheese can be used, processed slices are recommended for their smooth melting quality, compared to harder cheeses like mozzarella or parmesan.)
Step 9
Once the cheese has melted and the sauce has thickened nicely, stir in the 1/2 tablespoon of gochugaru. This will add a beautiful color and a subtle hint of spice.
Step 10
Your delicious Rosé Tteokbokki is ready! Serve it hot on a plate. For an extra touch, sprinkle with dried parsley or grated cheese. Now, enjoy your delightful homemade Korean feast! 🙂
