Colorful Skewered Jeon: A Vibrant Five-Color Feast for the Holidays
The Crown Jewel of Holiday Foods, Skewered Jeon :: Enjoy a Rainbow of Colors with Sanjeok Skewers
Isn’t Skewered Jeon the best among all Jeon dishes? That familiar taste from childhood, the colorful five-color Jeon that feels incomplete without at least one ingredient. To truly feel the holiday spirit during Chuseok, we must have Sanjeok skewers! I’ll show you how to make the easiest Chuseok food, Skewered Jeon, very simply and easily. 😀
Main Ingredients- Ham (your preferred type)
- Imitation crab meat (or crab sticks)
- Pickled radish (Danmuji)
- Green onion (white parts)
- Beef (for bulgogi or steak)
- King oyster mushrooms
- Eggs
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the ingredients for the Skewered Jeon. Slice the ham, imitation crab meat, pickled radish, king oyster mushrooms, and green onions into similar sizes. Typically, cutting them to half the length of the imitation crab sticks looks nice. Of course, you can also make beautiful Sanjeok skewers by cutting the ingredients lengthwise, skewering them, frying, and then cutting them. Feel free to adjust the size according to your preference.
Step 2
It’s best to use beef that’s not too thin, like steak cut. Gently press with paper towels to remove any blood, then slice it to a similar size as the other ingredients. Removing the blood will ensure a clean taste without any gamey odor.
Step 3
To evenly coat the skewers with egg batter, crack the eggs into a wide bowl and whisk them thoroughly. If you prefer a crispier texture, you can lightly coat the ingredients in flour before dipping them in the egg wash. Make your own personalized five-color Jeon by choosing your preferred method.
Step 4
Now it’s time to thread the prepared ingredients onto the skewers, one by one. Arranging them with consideration for color harmony will result in visually appealing Skewered Jeon.
Step 5
You can arrange the ingredients on the skewers in any order you like. I added steak-cut beef, making it more of a ‘Beef-Colored Jeon’ rather than a ‘Five-Color Jeon’. Inserting pickled radish or green onions between the meat and ham adds to both the color and flavor balance, making it even more delicious.
Step 6
Once all the ingredients are beautifully arranged on the skewers, coat them thoroughly with the egg batter. Heat a pan over low heat with a generous amount of oil, and place the egg-coated skewers in the pan. Cook until golden brown, ensuring you maintain a low heat. Cooking over high heat can burn the outside quickly, so gentle cooking is key.
Step 7
After slicing the ingredients, skewering them, and coating them in egg, you just need to fry them! This is truly the easiest and simplest dish among Chuseok holiday foods. You can make it even more special and delicious by customizing the ingredients based on your family’s preferences for a truly unique five-color Jeon.
Step 8
When you serve the golden-brown Sanjeok skewers alongside other Jeon dishes, you can really feel the holiday spirit, even if you’re not at your hometown. It’s extra special when shared with relatives, but even a quiet Chuseok can be made festive. With just delicious Skewered Jeon and Donggeurangttaeng (meatball pancakes), you can capture the abundant feeling of the holidays! Make sure to try making these delicious Skewered Jeon. 😀
